Is the howling sound normal?

I notice a slight low pitch howling/vacuum sound when idling on my Cayenne V8, the sound has been there since new, just wondering if it is normal?

Sounds like some kind of giant fan under the hood, right?

Yes, that's what it sounds like. It is there even if I switch off the climate control.
My Honda minivan is a lot more quiet. Just wondering if it is normal?

Mine does it too at odd times.. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that it's literally some kind of blower fan and it's a normal thing, but hopefully someone else can weigh in too
