Diesel: Oil Temp Question
Diesel: Oil Temp Question
Outside of towing, what do you see the oil temp get up to?
Normally I see it hang right about 200 and i think the highest I've seen it is 217 when I've been flogging it for a significant period of time on a hot day.
Today however, my cooling fans immediately kicked on high when i started up and they stayed on for awhile (at least 5 miles/8 minutes) like that (i could hear them in the cabin while doing 60!). The water temp shot up to the normal 200 within 1.5 miles, but then held there as usual.
In about the normal time (about 10 miles) my oil was up to 200, but then it kept climbing with a peak of 228! Once i got off the highway and into the city the temp dropped back to 218 and held there.
It is a moderately warm day (80 with a good breeze), but the interior was uncomfortably warm from the sun. The first 3 miles was main road residential, another 2 miles of more open main road, 35 or so on a few major highways cruising in the 60-80 range, and 10 through the city (though it flowed better than usual).
The oil was changed recently (definitely less than 1000 and i think less than 500, but i'd have to check) and the oil level reports the middle of normal and hasn't changed since the OCI.

Coming home after a 2 hour cool down, lighter traffic, and 10 degree cooler ambient temp and it again ran much hotter than I expect it should (221 was the highest I saw it at).
Just got home from a 3000 mile vacation to Florida and back. Running right around 80mph on the highway with an average total of 66mph.
While running at the 75 to 80mph my temp. runs at 230 degrees. When I pull my golf cart around I run up to 235 degrees.
By the way, running at those speeds, I still managed 30.5 mpg.

My 2013 Diesel runs that hot all summer long! Out in ARIZONA the outside temp runs in the 100s! When I tow my 27ft pontoon the oil temp runs up to 260! The water temp always hovers around 200 degrees! I asked my service advisor if I should add an additional oil cooler and he said "Not needed, that diesel is designed to take the heat!". So I have been running mine at these temps with no problems! But I still watch that temp every time I pull my boat!
