958 tail light--what is the WHITE LENS for?

I posted this question on Reenlist, but nobody knows the answer. Maybe someone here can tell us what the squarish/triangular shaped WHITE LENS is, on the upper half of the tail light?
The backup/reverse white light/lens is the thin horizontal slit at the bottom of the tail light lens.

It serves no function at all. It's just a design cue.

As you can see here it's made in the same color in the tinted version from Porsche.

2011, but I've noticed across many different model years.

IMHO, that's an unnecessary and not particular attractive design cue.

And I think so too. That's why I ordered my car with the tinted version.

So I took matters into my own hands, and got rid of the useless, white lens.
Applied transparent red vinyl over the lens, to give the taillights a monochromatic look. Not a big deal, and 99.99999% of the population wouldn't even notice it, but I do.
1st pic: Before (passenger side tail light)/After (driver side tail light)
2nd pic: all done

looks kinda fake to me, like those China goods.
might as well to add another tint on the whole unit to match OEM tinted tail lights.
