Rear bumper protection

On my '06 CSTi - it came with a rear cover protector. A rather annoying one as it liked to come off the plastic plate it was mounted to. Finally got it to stay on using 3M body-trim-tape. It did serve a purpose - it took the bashes that the bumper would have gotten otherwise.

So - the '11 CTT doesn't have one. No 958.1 came with one. Porsche doesn't sell one.

But there are ones in the aftermarket - like Amazon:
https://amzn.com/B0191BI8A2

958 rear bumper protection - 1

Looks nice - price is good ($99) - mounts with the same 3M tape. Only thing - it doesn't go down around the edge of the bumper, and that's where there are a few scratches despite having clear-bra protection for the bumper and edge.

Then there is:
https://amzn.com/B019PQTKZK

Bumper protection - 2

It looks a lot like the first one, but one of the closeup photos in the listing shows the lettering ending with an "S" - so I'm guessing it sez "Cayenne S" on it. Also doesn't seem to cover the edge of the bumper. Plus it requires "professional installation" - they mention glue. Ugg. It is cheaper.

Next up:
https://amzn.com/B0181Z1A5E

Bumper protection - 3

I kinda like this one - but it's out of stock - and no price given. It's the closest in design to the Porsche one on my '06.. It mentions being for a 2015, but someone who tried it said it was too curved - maybe it fits the earlier bumper of the 958.1 series.. like my 2011 CTT..? Or not..

Finally:
https://amzn.com/B00XXOENJO

Bumper Protection - 4

This one I like. Costs more ($133) - but it shows it going over the edge of the bumper. And it has almost full tape on the back so it's going to stay on.

So my question to the gang - anyone tried one of these? I figure if they're selling them there has to be some market for them besides me.. any experience to pass on?

I've been looking for the same. Looks like you found better options than I did. I agree that the protection should fold down the bumper.

Yeah - the last one seems to be the only one made for the 958.1 that does go down over the edge. The edge seems particularly vulnerable.. dragged suitcases (damn valets!) can really mess up that edge. DAMHIK..

BTW - there are a BUNCH of them on eBay.. but prices were generally higher than Amazon, shipping was being charged, and the return policy for Amazon is really a deciding factor for me. You can pretty much return it if you don't think it was accurately represented. Try doing that with an eBay item from China.. not gonna happen. Oh - Alibaba also has the same ones, higher price, shipping, no guarantee at all.

Heard back from the chap who posted a review of the last one on Amazon. He said he is still quite pleased with it, confirmed it does fold down over the edge and it's remained firmly attached, and is doing it's job protecting the bumper.

So I ordered one. I'll take photos when it arrives and I install it.

Thumbs up

Thought I'd update this with a few photos/impressions:

Delivery: Ordered on the 18th - delivered on the 27th - 9 days in transit from China. I was impressed. Scale of 1-10 for delivery - 10.

Packaging: Packaged to survive almost anything (see photos below.) It arrived in perfect condition, and no sign that it has been opened for customs. Scale of 1-10 for packaging - 10.

Instructions: None - but how hard can it be? Clean bumper, mark center on the bumper with a grease pencil, and on the trim piece with the same grease pencil, then remove cover over the 3M adhesive tape, align marks and press down. Instructions - 1 on a scale of 1-10. Actual installation - on a difficulty scale of 1-10, a 1 (for even brain dead could install it.)

Fit and finish: Perfect. Brushed stainless finish. "Cayenne" impressed in the center. Edge come down just over the angled lip on the bumper - which is what gets scratched. The finish/color nicely match the silver plastic trim on the bottom of the hatch. The hatch doesn't touch it when closed, and the hatch seals seal to the opening of the hatch, not the bumper. Scale of 1-10, another 10.

Value: OK value IMHO. Customs declarion stated a value of $30 - probably wholesale. It was $110 shipped, so considering shipping was easily worth $20-30 or more - not a bad price. At least for anything that said Cayenne on it. Scale of 1-10, where 10 would be free and 1 outrageous, probably an 8 or 9. It was a quite fair price IMHO.

Photos:

Installed - hatch open

Closeup installed - hatch open

Installed - hatch closed

Closeup - installed showing lip over the edge of the bumper - hatch closed
.

I think it was the right choice. Be nice if it also came in a glossy-black finish - then with the replacement of the hatch trim strip with a black one - the glossly black on white theme would be complete.. but since my rims have a silver edge on black glossy rims - the silver is suitable IMHO for this truck.

I'm happy.

Just as an update..

Took the P!G from NJ to CA and back to NJ - with SWMBO's luggage taking up most of the rear compartment. No scratches, no near misses. The bumper protector worked fine, and stayed in place.

Also - turned around in a Police Precinct parking lot in Nashville TN - happened to notice an identical twin to my Turbo parked in the lot (same white with gloss-black trim package) - that had a bumper cover on it. This one had the cover with the ribs that match the interior sill. It looked fine. Didn't get out of my car to check it out - but from 10' away it looked just fine. Ribs looked OK. So if that's your choice, I think it would also work. If the person who owned that Cayenne is here - say HI!
