According the manual the 12v sockets require using accessories with their side contacts at 16mm from the front.

Are there different versions of these sockets? As in, ones for 12v devices like chargers and then something else for cigarette lighters?

Such things are actually covered by standards, but unfortunately hidden behind a paywall. Wikipedia sort of covers it.

I'd be willing to swap the socket, I've done it on other vehicles in the past (but that was usually just to eliminate an attached or hinged socket cover.
