Dash-Cam Captured - Parked, Hit and Run

A week ago, I parked the Cayenne on the street going for lunch.
Came back, top of the bumper was warped.
The dash-cam caught the Jeep with a tire carrier backed into the Cayenne. There was more than 1/2 car length between the Jeep and the Cayenne. (Not sure if it is legal to post the video. It shows the people getting to the car and license plate of the Jeep.)

I've reported to my insurance company and supplied them with the video. I was hoping they would investigate and go after the Jeep's insurance company. Now, my insurance wants to claim the hit and run as collision and have me pay the deductible. It seems that they didn't care to investigate.
If I knew that was the case, I would not have reported. I would have pay for the whole repair than risking my insurance company, increasing the rate because of the claim. The total repair was under $1000. Lesson learned.

No, I did not file a police report. An accident is an accident... if (big if) the police do investigate, a hit and run is a misdemeanor charge. Didn't want to do that to the person. (That person should thank my daughter, she talked me out of reporting it.)

Thanks for reading and letting me vent.

I am sorry that happened to you. I am glad your camera identified the culprit and how it happened. You might try requesting the name and address of the Jeep via the plate, through your local DMV. I know they generally provide some identifying information. Then go talk to them and show them the video and explain you did not file a police report, and ask them to cover your co-pay.

I am not as nice, I have had to many cars hit while parked in San Francisco. I would have reported it to the police, it is a misdemeanor, and then fought with the insurance that the car was parked and unattended at the time and was hit through no fault of your own. That should not count as an accident on your insurance. Good luck.

That's a horrible insurance company. I'd take my money elsewhere if I were you.

This was not an 'accident'. This was negligence on the part of the other driver. An accident is sliding into someone on ice, not being unable to negotiate a parking situation. You don't back into another vehicle and not notice it. Maybe you choose to think "oh, it was just a tap". Having had Jeeps with a spare on the back, I'd notice having struck something.

This was recorded in a public space there should be no restrictions on posting a video of it.

If you're hesitant about filing a police report, out of some sort of misplaced sympathy for the other driver, you'd be best served contacting them and requesting they pay the full amount of repairs, immediately. If they decline or claim innocence, take the clip of the incident to the police and file a hit-and-run report. Just do not make it a 'threat' to the other party, let them know you possess proof of their vehicle being involved. If they refuse, only then would you want to say something to the effect of being left with no choice than to pursue this with the authorities.

Yes, an accident is an accident. But a Hit & Run is breaking the law. Assuming they noticed they hit your car and then made the decision to flee. I would go to the police.

Insurance may not pay (anything) without a police report . . . May be why they insist you pay the deductible, you are getting off easy. I think you are foolish for not reporting this.

Quick update. I was able to find additional information on-line from the license plate. Forwarded the information to my insurance company.
They were able to track down the owner of the Jeep and was able to settle the case with their insurance company. The bumper fixed and the insurance returned the deductible.
The internet sometime can be a wonderful thing.
