Just a little exhaust thread
Hello all,
I've had my Cayenne for about 2 years now, and I finally got around to making a small exhaust for it and figured maybe someone here would at least like to see it....
I basically cut out the rear muffler and welded on V-bands to attach the new exhaust, that way I can re-attache the oem muffler if I didn't like it or wanted to return to stock. It is made out of 304 ss in 3" after I stretched it from the oem 2.5". I used two Vibrant 3" in dual 2.5" out mufflers which are also 304 ss. Then finished it off with 4 4" double walled tips. I also made new hangers since the oem hangers were rusted pretty bad, and I didn't order replacements as I didn't realize how bad they were. I used 1/2 hangers, also 304, that I bent and welded directly to the mufflers.

And here is how it sits....I plan on raising the entire exhaust another .5~1" by moving the hangers since it sits a little low. I also added my logo out of 304 and used it as a brace welding both the exhausts together so they stay at the same height.
Overall, I was expecting it to be obnoxiously loud, thus the v-band to easily swap back, but I was very surprised that it is very quiet, with a lot more rumble now. Highway speeds has no drone and it is still very quiet inside the cab of the vehicle.... This has not been my normal result on any of my other exhausts I've made over the years!

Wow wish I had the kind of tools needed to fab that up. It looks pretty amazing. But you don't think it's that different from stock? Did you make any changes upstream like cat bypass pipes or anything?
I had a local shop put magnaflow mufflers in place of my stock system. It sounds OK but I it's the tips that are really letting my system down. It sounds like a loud whistle at WOT.
What tips did you use if you don't mind sharing? They look great, but not sure they'd work with my system since I didn't upsize the exhaust.....yet
From the low level rear view I'd agree the center of it needs to come up a bit, but other than that it looks AMAZING!!!

Oh it sounds much deeper and rumbles over stock...just doesn't make a lot of noise rolling down the highway, which I am more than fine with.
I didn't make cat bypasses, yet. From past experience, I've found when you start at the down pipe and move back, so does the volume. I didn't want to get crazy just yet, as I always do. I wanted to see how the turbo v8 sounds compared to a highly modded inline turbo 4, that is just obnoxious to drive as a daily. I wish I had time to just play around with my stuff, but everyone else's always comes first...
Thanks for the kind words...
Oh the tips can be found on eBay for $50 a set. They are made in china, but a decent quality. I had a few left over from a 996 exhaust job and really liked them, since I didn't have to take days making them.

Pretty cool nonetheless. Glad you are pleased so far. I put in secondary cat bypass pipes after installing the system initially. Like I said the sound at idle and low throttle is decent but I want more.
My other car is a de-catted 308 with a wide open Stebro system so it is MUCH louder. Not that I want the Cayenne to be that loud, but I do want more volume.
There are more than a couple folks here looking for a total 3" system from at least the secondary pipes back (hint-hint). I'm toying with replacing the primary cats but don't want the Cayenne to be as "stinky" as the 308. Of course the 308 is a carb car too which makes a big difference!!
I set my setup to be able to go full 3" if I want down the road, and from past experience, it will raise the volume substantially. I don't have a mandrel bender, so cost wise or profit wise, wouldn't be great, lol. It is very time consuming making each bend, or using pre-bent pieces and welding them together. But it is do-able. I just am not in the business of mass production, since I am a one man shop. I can however hand make an exhaust to fit a particular vehicle while in my shop...
