Need help with rumbling noise?!

ok, so at about 2500RPM going from 2nd to 3rd I get this horrible sounding rumbly grinding like noise. It also occurs consistently 3rd to 4th around 2000RPM, but not as obnoxiously. Already had it to the dealer...$4500 for new transfer case and NO FREAKING DIFFERENCE!!! Some of you may be surprised that they don’t really seem too interested in trouble shooting this.

I have some video on YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_M7L0tUebCg

any ideas would be helpful because I have to take it back in and I want my baby back!

I remember seen a YouTube video with a similar noise they guy took his transfer case apart and replaced the internal bearings.
The dealer should be able to diagnose this properly.

Well, supposedly they replaced the entire transfer case, so I don’t know but I presume that would include new bearings?

Yes,the bearings are internal.

The guy on YouTube took his apart put the bearings on a lathe to reproduce the sound.
He also disconnected both drive shafts to narrow it down to the XC, while still on the car.

Start there take the front or rear off and listen.

The dealer will just replace the entire unit as they claim its not serviceable.

Otherwise it needs to be on a dyno style lift and the mechanic underneath to locate the sound.

How many miles on the ODO?

Same XC as the Cayenne.
Some of the comments may be helpful.

45k miles. Way beyond me to go mucking in a transfer case, but I appreciate the ill begotten confidence. Ha ha. Unfortunately I’m basically dependent on them fixing it correctly. They should make it right as the transfer case is now under warranty since they “replaced” it. Key I guess is everyone seems to agree it DOES seem to be a transfer case issue.

Jayi836,

thanks for the YouTube pearl. Isn’t that something I should reasonably expect a Porsche tech to know and do?

It’s 2009 CTT w/ just 45k miles

why fo those who post always forget the obvious? Sorry

It’s 2009 CTT w/ just 45k miles. I’ve previously had a 2008 CTT and a 2003 CTT. It sounded normal when I got it only three months ago. I noticed the engine noise about a week after installing a Sprint Booster (which I had also in my previous Cauennes) and initially thought that had something to do with it.

I agree if the XC is new and didn't fix the original problem the dealer is on the hook for the additional troubleshooting and possible repairs.

45K seems way premature for the XC to fail, it doesn't require and service until 160K or 16 years. They narrowed it down to a drive line issue.
May need to get a regional service manager involved if they give you the run around.

I have a 2011 CTT engine and transmission failed in 2015, at 121 and 127K.
I'm a DIY'er and hate going to the dealer unless forced to.

A driveshaft bearing. Change it and you wont hear that noise again.

Going back to dealer this Thursday 10/12/2017 and I plan to let them know the consensus of everyone here. Thanks for the help and I’ll get back to you all soon!

soooo. My P!G has been at the dealership another long weekend and today I call for an update. Aaron at MAG Porsche in Dublin tells me,

"Um, yes. The problem is a transfer case internal failure."

I respond "Didn't you just replace the transfer case week before last? How could that even happen?"

"Um, yeah, we ordered an updated version from Germany and just got it today. It should be ready tomorrow or day after. It's all covered under your previous repair warranty, of course, so there will be no charge to you."

"An updated version? That's odd!" Then I ask, "The drive shaft bearing and bracket are all OK?"

"Um, the technician will be looking all that over to make sure the problem is taken care of. Thanks for your patience."

All I can say is I'm glad to have driven a Maserati and Porsche Macan as loaners, which has been pretty fun. I will update the status once I get my CTT back later this week...

until next time...

An upgraded version? That’s just plain bullsh.tting of people. There’s none. Porsche upgraded only stepper, and that cannot be source of that noise. I’m still betting on a d-shaft bearing.

Do you (or anyone else) think that they would be as brash as to have misdiagnosed the transfer case as the issue and are now fixing the drive shaft bearing so as to not have to compensate me on the difference ($4500 transfer case vs about $1500 drive shaft repair)? If so, any ideas on how could I prove it?

Also, isn't diagnosis of the driveshaft bearing/hanger issue rather simple?
