re-dye and finish a leather steering wheel?

Sorry if I don't have the terms quite right, but here is my question. I have a wood and leather steering wheel with about 5 years of daily-driver use. Not bad, but a little discolored. Leather cleaners are not doing the trick. A little finish worn off too. The color is an optional color from 2003; Natural Brown. (A light brown--I would describe as "saddle" myself).

I was wondering if a leather repair service could re-dye and refinish the few leather pieces. Or do you think this would be too risky?

This one is a pickle. Problem being if it's re-dyed, the oils and acids in your hands may take off the dye. Your best bet is to try someone that specializes in upholstery restoration or install that's in your area. This way, you can see some of their work and if you decide to use their services, can also have the warranty of taking it back if something goes wrong in a few years.

I'm not sure, but I think his steering wheel is actually void of pigment. As for the Mr Clean Eraser, it should not be used on the leather of a $100K car. There are actual products that are safe and pH balanced to clean leather properly for automotive interiors.

One thing I might try before looking for a pro (not easy in my neck of the woods) is the Colorplus product. Nice comments over at PCA.org as well as others. I do not think I could get into too much trouble trying this, anyway.

I used dallas custom steering wheel and it re-covered. Excellent job and quick turn around. The guy is Don L. He is honest and I would use him again
