GM paint info.

I have been finding it impossible to polish/cut the clear on my car. (07 Pontiac Solstice.) I assume this info. might be relevant to Corvettes too. So, I found this out from a painter at GM.

"The Solstice/Sky is painted with Dupont paint. The Primer is a solvent borne product painted electrostatically with FANUC/SAMES bells machines. The basecoat is a waterborne paint applied electrostatically with FANUC robots with FANUC/SAMES Accusttat sprayguns. The solventborne clearcoat is applied electrostatically with FANUC robots and SAMES bells. It is a two component material (polyurethane). That is why is is hard! Resitant to the ever increasing pollutants in the environment."

I do not know if this means anything to a Professional detailer. But, I thought I would let you folks know...in case you run into a similar problem.

Thanks!

Thanks for sharing. It's pretty cool you took the initiative to go through GM and find out this info. I think most paint now days is applied electrostatically because this uses the least amount of paint to cover the area. I know manufacturers may state otherwise, but when the light hits a Sierra Truck, Cadillac, even a new Ferrari F430, you can see what I'm talking about. It's more evident on black cars that are flat, not metallic.

What process have you been doing on the polishing that's giving you a hard time? What pad, polish, polisher, speed, etc. are you doing and using? We may get to the bottom of all this.

I agree, more info is needed about the process not so much the paint.... (however knowing about the paint is good too)

What buffer machine are you using and what products do you have?

Are you trying to get rid of swirls or holograms or what??
