Will heat fade paint?

Is it true that heat alone without sunlight can gradually fade paint? For instance, my garage has no windows so not sunlight gets in but it is very hot during the day. thanks

DetailedDesigns is infamous around these parts
Let me start by saying I do not know the answer for certain.

It's the harmful rays from sun that are so damaging. Not as much the heat. Also, the heat that would be in a garage is not that bad on the scale of how hot painted surfaces get in direct sunlight. Manufacturers make auto paint so that it endures outright abuse before it fails. I don't think you have anything to worry about having it in a garage that may reach 105 degrees.

I will ask some friends that I have in the paint industry and get to the bottom of it for you though.

Great question. Heat alone shouldn't effect the color of the paint. It's the sun's UV rays that, over time, will fade the color. But this effect can be greatly mitigated by further protecting the clear coat with a quality wax.

Ultra violet (UV) radiation is known to contribute to the chemical modification of exposed paint surfaces resulting in loss of gloss, colour change, chalking, flaking and eventually destruction of the clear coat paint film.
Heat alone will not cause photosynthesis (fading) UVB radiation is what is responsible
