Question for the board...

I have a nissan maxima (2003) in black that I bought as basic transportation...and as a test to see if I could manage black paint. I think I have worked out how to get swirls out of this paint (took a while...but help from this board and other sources finally sunk in...). I am pretty confident that I can wash the car without generating more.

Next step...how on earth do you keep the paint looking clean for more than 30 minutes after a cleaning? What are some of the strategies to keep it clean without grinding another set of swirl marks into the paint? The concept of a duster just doesn't make sense to me (let's run this dust/particle covered mess all over your car). The detailer sprays seem almost as much work as washing the car as the dust is on the entire car...not just a single spot.

Would love to hear how people manage this.

Very simple. Not all duster are created equally. GP Australian Wool Dusters use static electricity to "lift" dust particles into the soft wool fibers. You re-activate the static charge by rubbing the duster in between your hand, then gently twirl the duster over the paint. The tips of the wool fibers should only touch the paint.

To clean the duster, simply use a mild detergent like woolite, clean it, then rub with microfiber towel to get the excess water out. Hang to air dry, and it's as good as new.

Another great idea is to simply rinse the car mid-week with deionized water to rinse off the dust from the past few days. It's not perfect, but it helps and you let it air dry.

Hope these suggestions make the care of black car more bearable.
