Older F car?

Anyone own an older Ferrari?

I'm curious because I'd like to purchase a 348 GTB someday.

How are they to maintain and insure?

Give them time, they will shime in. Most will say this though -

If you must ask, you probably can't afford it. Maintaining an older F car (pre-360's) are a *****.

I like the 348 GTB's but you really need to be well braced for maintenance surprises. $5-10K bills are nothing unusual. If you can get past the entry price it is probably cheaper to own a 360 vs. a 348 or 355. The 328's aren't so bad on maintenance.

I have a 308 (new aquisition), have had 456 and Dino 246 in the past. Would still like to pick up a 348 or 355 (gts). You have to have a repair fund the size of a Honda, just in case, and be ready for $5-7k majors every 5 years or so. Do you research (I am on ferrarichat) and get a PPI before buying, or you could be stuck with a $20-30k engine rebuild...

i own a 328, mondial 3.2 and now recently a 360. the 3.2L engines are some of the easiest to maintain hence why I "doubled up" on them. if you like the 348, you are in luck as not many do and hence the cheaper price comparitively speaking. nevertheless, plan for $5-7K every 5yrs on the major service and a few hundred here or there for misc items

otherwise, enjoy!

The 348 is a pretty solid car overall and has none of the major expensive issues that have plagued the 355's such as valve guides, cats, and headers.

Engine does have to come out for services, though.

Nice cars and very nice to drive from what I am told.

As anything else, you have to have the car examined prior to a purchase.

Does anyone do their own maintenance?

I'm an engineer and have pulled a few engines and built one.

I'm sure I'd be able to handle the prancing horse as well.

What type of work requires pulling the motor? Is their just no room to work on anything with the engine in the car?

Of course. It's not an specialized machine. It's a car.

From the 360 on, maintenance is done with the engine in the vehicle. There is pleanty of room.

Earlier models require the engine to be removed.

Can't help answering your question about DIY.

But, there is only one man that touches my car
