Rather odd...

So I leave for work this AM and notice some low set headlights behind me about a few hundred yards back. It's a typical early fall NY day: not cold but nasty, raining and leaves are falling all around. I think to myself the distance between the lights could indicate Ferrari but that's doubtful b/c of the weather. There are
plenty of F-cars around my neighborhood, but I NEVER see them besides nice days. Anyway, I think "it's probably a Corvette" since the lights can look similar from a distance. I stop at the light and what comes up shortly thereafter but a red 430 coupe! Nice sounding exhaust! I give the guy credit for driving it the rain. As I continue along my way, about a mile or so later, I'm stopped at another light and what comes across the intersection but a red 360 coupe ! Maybe Ferararis are becoming true daily drivers ...

Well, mine is a daily driver, too. And we have a Maserati, a California, a V10 R8, and a Bentley Continental in my neck of the woods that are, too.
Now, today I took my Lincoln to work, but only because I have to pick up two 8-foot shelves at Lowe's on the way home from work this afternoon. Still, the Ferrari is out in the lot, having commutted to work, parked under a tree where birds can crap on it, probably four days a week.
Friends who keep garage queens warn me that Ferraris ars aren't made for the rain (Done't Ferrari doesn't race (and often win) in the rain?) and that I will drive up maintenance costs and wear it out (true, but it seems strange to pay all that money and then limit driving because you are worried about a $15K bill for a major scheduled service round). Cars are just cars, even the "great" ones. Don't kick yourself about it being special - someday my F430 will be in a salvage yard.
I have seen only one car in all my life that I think is worthy of putting up on a pedestal and preserving like art, and it is: Pininfarina's masterpiece, the 1946 Cisitalia 202 coupe on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Most F-car owners don't drive them in the rain for a variety of reasons but you are right Lee. As "great" as some of these cars seem, very few, if any will be amongst the truly collectible years down the line. Strangely enough, about 9:30 en route to my soccer match I come across an R8 in the pouring rain. That car seems more suited to the weather but even so, most of these are weekend/fair weather toys. At the extreme I remember from a few years back the owner driving a Maserati MC12 through snow and junk in Europe and side-swiping the guard-rail. Now that was a car that should have been well preserved !
