Run Flats - Anyone have an opinion for the F430

I see they are an option - Any thoughts on ride versus the standard issue - I hear they ride the same (these particular tires) as compared to other run flats.

Honestly, I am not a fan of EMT tires. I have driven several cars with them and several similar cars without. I would not waste the money. They only hurt performance in my opinion. Can't speak in reference to ferraris, but driven several vettes with and without them.

Run flats tend to be quite a bit heavier than conventional tires, I would stay away from them. Why buy a super high performance car and handicap it with unnecessary unsprung weight increases?

I'm w/ Joe, however the EMT michelins we just put on my dads vette are actually very nice. They grip pretty damn good. I think that was the biggest problem w/ the stock EMT's ont he vette

I get calls DAILY from people who want to take them off of Vettes, Minis, and the new BMW's because the ride quality is so hard with a runflat. Most people hate them. They'd rather take their chances with a non runflat and get some of the tires feel back. And yes, they are usually heavier by about 5-6 lbs each.

Thanks all - The only reason I would tend to even think about them is that the ones on the F430 seem to have been developed for the F430 - I don't know if this is hype or not. Here is the press release:

Ferrari Chooses Goodyear Run-Flat Tires for New F430
#22953ti.904
PARIS, France, Sept. 27, 2004 – One of the highlights of this year’s Paris Motor Show is the unveiling of the new Ferrari F430, the 360 Modena successor, that will be available with the exclusive run-flat tire option of Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 EMT.

The Ferrari F430 with its innovative Goodyear tires is on display at the Pininfarina booth 314 in Hall 1 at the Paris show.

The new Ferrari F430 will be equipped with Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 EMT 225/35ZR19 (front) and Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 EMT 285/35ZR19 (rear).

The Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3, the award winning top performer of Goodyear’s high performance tire range, is the perfect match for Ferrari’s latest creation. With its 4300cc 90-degree V8 engine Ferrari’s new F430 takes four seconds to reach 100km/h (62 mph) from a standing start and reaches a top speed of more than 315 km/h (196 mph).

"A car with such performance needs to be equipped with the best tires on the market. We are proud that Ferrari chose the Goodyear Eagle F1 with run-flat technology," said Jean Jacques Wiroth, European director of Original Equipment Sales and Marketing for Goodyear.

"The Eagle F1 provides excellent performance for the F430 and at the same time Goodyear’s run-flat technology guarantees the highest possible level of safety should the driver have a puncture," he said.

Goodyear run-flat tires can be safely driven after a puncture or total loss of pressure. The reinforced sidewalls consist of an innovative rubber that bears the weight of the car even when the tire is totally deflated and keeps the tire on the rim.

The Eagle F1 GSD3, with its striking V-shaped tread design and OneTRED technology, continues to set the standard among tires in its class. It has captured the top spot in key consumer magazine ratings, won several technology awards and captured countless tire comparison tests in Europe. Recently the Eagle F1 received the Editor’s Choice Award for New Products from Popular Mechanics magazine and two leading U.S. consumer magazines named Goodyear’s Eagle F1 line the top-rated ultra-high performance choice in their recent tire-featured issues.
