I'll answer this simply for the sport of it...

The only Ferrari's you're going to find under $65K are:

Salvaged/Storied 355's.
High-mileage 348's with the testarossa style sides
and a grip of Magnum PI 308's.

"Best buy" in terms of performance? Resale?

For $65K, you're better off getting something newer and not italian

348 wins my vote in that price range. $80k will get you a nice F355 though, which is vastly better. Under $100k, I would not touch a F car. You won't get better performance than German and your F car will be overly costly to maint / repair (and it will need some work as a 15+ yr old car). Most F car prior to 360 doesn't get much looks, cost a fortune to maint and perform not as well as a 996. The only thing older F cars have is the signature ferrari sound.

spend 65 on buying one then 10 K on fixing it. Id go with a newer car personally, like a CLK or a 6 series.

How about the 456? If it's not under 65 grands, it must be getting right there.

Stay away from the auto 456. If that auto box goes, you'll be stuck with a huge bill.

Yes, if we're talking 456M. Early (1995) 456 shouldn't go anywhere over 80k. And dropping.
And +1 on the auto. If you buy an automatic ferrari, you deserve to have it fail on you!

The $65K would just be the price of entry. Then budget the same amount for maintenance and repair over the next three years. Wait until you can afford a 360.
