Yes...they do... but rather than have them open and close (soft/loud)...I wanted to have that incredible sound all the time!

Are you sure it bypasses the entire exhaust system? If it went to striaght pipes I think the emissions would be off and then there would be a check engine light. I know on the 599 normally two of the four exhausts are closed off by a butterfly valve in the exhaust and then at WOT they open which makes the car twice as loud. If you leave them open you reduce the back pressure at low speeds and reduce hp/torque. Is the 430 just completely different?

You are correct, they dont run through completely...it's a very similar setup to the 599. The functionality is also very similar if the the same as some aftermarket exhausts which do not lose HP.

If it does lose on the low end, it's negligible. I had a track ready M3 with straight pipes and had no loss of power on the dyno...before and after.

The sound alone with the valves pulled at lower speeds is just nuts....

Im used to 600+ turbocharged 911s...I dont miss that power one bit with the F430. initally, I thought I would but everything else about this car makes up for it..huge!

I just love watching the tach hit 8400 with the red LEDS going off, at that point HP doesn't matter.

It does not.

The by-pass valves serve one major function. They help to burn up unburnt hydrocarbons when the engine is cold or at engine RPM's below 2,500. They have no other functional purpose.

When closed (low RPM's) they force exhaust gases to leave the muffler through one exhaust outlet per side thereby keeping gases w/in the muffler to heat up and burn. When they open, gasses flow out of all 4 tubes.

It's also a means by which Ferrari and others such as Maserati can keep the exhaust output below 75 dB at low RPM's to meet some state's requirements.

So the exhaust gasses still passes through the muffler. Not a straight pipe.

The 430 has a smaller OEM muffler than the 360 because of Ferrari's new "flat crank" design which causes each cylinder to produce the equal exhaust note thereby offering an inherent exhaust silencing.
