Favorite Hydraulic Floor Jack
Favorite Hydraulic Floor Jack
Well, my cheapo Wal-mart floor jack that I used for years finally gave out after a ton of tire changes/rotations. Want to invest in a solid performer, racing style floor jack. What are everyone's favorites? I've heard the Craftsman totally suck, but the Harbor Freight varierty is decent (go figure)
It doesn't need to be real expensive. I used one of these for 3 racing seasons. changing 2 sets of tires a weekend. You can go all the way to 1200 bucks if you want but not necessary. also depends on car weight. I might have the 180buck version It's been a while

I got a Arcan aluminum 2 ton floor jack from Costco. Was about $100-130, I can't remember. It is really lightweight though, what I love about it. It is also the size of other industrial jacks, and has a nice stance.
I am under my car, or a friends every weekend, and it works perfect. Only thing I don't like about it: the rubber piece on the plate that lifts the car came off.

I just ordered a Harbor Freight 3-ton aluminum racing jack after TWO Craftsman jacks have failed on me. Whatever you do, DON'T get a Craftsman...they fail. I know that I'm not the first one either.
YOU will love it. Mine seems bulletproof.

I've been meaning to buy one to take with me to track days now. The 3k one seems like a good choice:

How do you choose the correct jack capacity? Is it just jack capacity > curb weight? My Cayenne's curb weight is 4950 lbs. I'll be using it about twice a year for summer/winter wheel swap.
get a heavier jack and use jack stands for your cayenne. safety with 5k in the air is important.
the aluminum jacks we are talking about will hoist half but you shouldn't. plus these aluminum race jacks are shorter stance to get underneath shorter cars. you should be able to find a good heavier jack and be a lot safer in the end

I picked up this one a few months ago from Northern Tool. I <3 how low profile it is, but it's pretty long, which makes it a tad burdensome to maneuver around, but also makes it great for reaching just about any jack point under the car with ease.

Wow that Nothern tool Jack is really sweet! I have a craftsman....I use it fairly regularly on 4 cars and it hasnt given out on me yet- 3yrs strong. My buddy has one thats newer Craftsman and has failed multiple times leaking ect. Anyway u look at it the Craftsman is made in China and doesnt carry a long warranty- year at most i think. Its a gamble. HF jacks are pretty good I dont own one, but I'd prolly buy one over craftsman.
I have two Craftsman aluminum jacks, going on 8+ years now. Neither has failed, and I use them both quite a bit. I dig that low-pro Northern Tool one, will have to pick that one up for the shop.
