Installed my GMG RSR Rollbar

Well, Fabryce and Joe at GMG put together a nice red powder coated RSR rollbar for me. Arrived packaged very well. Took 20 minutes to remove all the foam and bubble wrap.

The process to install was pretty straight forward and bear in mind, this was my first time doing this.

1) Disconnected battery

2) Removed front seats

3) Covered everything with blankets (got some cheap moving blankets from Home Depot).

4) Removed back carpeting the covers the strut mounts.

5) disconnected the PASM cables from the control unit (had to remove wire ties that were in place)

6) Removed the 6 nuts from the towers.

7) Installed the back piece of the roll bar (it comes in two pieces). Kept the nuts VERY loose.

8) removed the seat belt 17mm bolt from the frame

9) Removed the seat belt plastic covers on the b-pillar.

10) Snaked in the front portion of the bar and covered it up along the top and ends so as not to damage anything while working it.

11) Worked the bottom mount points into place. I must say that getting them close enough to just put the bolt there was probably the most challenging step.

12) I then mated the front / back portions of the bar and connected them via 6 hex machine screws

13) Then worked REAL hard to get the bottom mount point lined up with the lower seat belt mount point. This rollbar is in so tight, it isn't going ANYWHERE. Tightened everything up - strut towers, reattached PASM wires.

14) Re-attached the seat belt covers on the B-Pillars.

15) Measured the necessary length required for the seat belt bolts at the bottom and cut them to length. Reinstalled with SS lock nut.

16) Installed a new interior piece of carpeting with the holes pre-cut. I bought the carpeting from Suncoast Parts. Note that this carpet did not fit perfectly. I had to cut away around 1/2" toward the middle on the passenger side and around 1" toward the middle on the driver side. The hole is too large on both side - think I'll fill it in with the black felt or something that won't make it obvious.

17) Installed the seats

18) Reconnected battery

19) Went for a ride - not creaks at all and I didn't break anything during the install.

I'm ready for my DE event at Roebling.

Total time - 4 hours. And I had NO idea what I was doing.

Thanks again to the guys at GMG!

I'll post pics tomorrow once the sun comes up.

Only thing I don't like are the hole sizes in the carpeting. I'll fill them in with black felt or something. When I feel ambitious, I'll buy a solid piece and use the one I have as a template.

And let me just say that I'm pretty sore this morning. Felt like I had a wrestling match with a rollbar last night. Glad that's over!

Looks good! Great pics, and good job. Now all you need is a 6 point harness to make the look complete.

So I decided quickly that the carpet was so bad looking. I decided to use the one I cut up as a template. I then went for broke and cut up my original solid one. This looks much better.

I'll leave the other photos there for reference on how the Original Clubsport Carpeting matches with the GMG RSR Bar. My advice is to buy a solid one and figure it out from there.

Wow, that looks so much better. No one wants to state the obvious, especially when we are all so detail oriented and stuff like that cuts deep into our hearts and seriously bugs us. Way to take it on the chin as example for others in how "not to" do it.

Way to recover! Overall, great cage! One up on Rep power for you!

Haven't tackled that part yet. I'll need new seats first.

couple of more shots of GMG roll bar ****

I found that I needed to add a little padding to the back of the seat where it made contact with the roll bar. I only had to do this on the driver side. The passenger side was OK.

You have a little extra from your cuttings. I did have to make a couple of inserts to finish it off. Little craft glue (my girlfriends craft hobby now has a purpose) and you are good to go.

for all considering this install. make lots of templets of the bar before cutting the carpet. if your doing a contrasting color make more. Black carpet and craft glue is you friend. Make more templets and then make more. Seriously its not bad, but its one of those things where the going slow and being **** pays dividends later.

I have no idea what Porsche charges for a new cover, but I am guessing it involves committing my first born and a body part to be named at a future date

mikemdd is infamous around these parts
Just wondering if you purchased only the the pre-cut carpet that fit the RS rollbar or the entire shelf unit (foam, carpet, etc.) with the carpet as a unit. I just installed a harness bar and need to cover the rear shelf as you did. I would like to keep my orginal shelf unit stock and cover the the opening with something else.
