New 2011 GT3 owner questions
Hey all, got a new GT3 a few months ago and it's just about broken in now. I have a sharkwerks bypass coming in the next week which I understand is quite awesome. I love the sound the stock one makes above 3k when the sport button is on and just had to have more. What other things should I look into doing? ECU tune worth doing? Intake?
Another question I have is when I'm driving around town what rpm should I be running at? It's pretty limp and unhappy at low RPM and it sounds so nice at higher ones. The service manager at the dealership said you can drive them around at 6k rpm all day long and not hurt it. Thought I would get some 2nd opinions and see what everyone else is doing.
Anyone have any problems with the radio getting crackly like you have bad reception, but on every station now and then? Took in in for service and they couldn't find anything wrong.
I also took it in for what sounded like a belt squealing, but they said it was the fuel injectors and high pressure fuel pump and is normal. Anyone else have that? It's a fairly noisy engine, minus the exhaust. Little sound dampening, sounds like hell breaking loose in the garage.
I signed up for a memorial weekend track event, but I registered too late and all the slots were full and got stuck on the waiting list. Doesn't look like I'm getting in.

Hello, and congrats on your new ride!
I just took ownership myself and I'm eager to know the answers too. I bought a crashed 07' GT3, which I'm converting to an '11 GT3 RS. I won't be able to drive it for like a month.

Congrats! You're going to love it at the track. I've had mine since November and although I've already done 2 track days with it, it's still nowhere near the recommended 2k break-in miles. So I probably won't be done with break-in until after the next track event
All sorts of noise comes from the rear end of the car and it's hard to tell if they're normal because I seem to hear some new kind of racket, squeal, rattle, or other additional mechanical sounds almost every time I drive it. Everyone including my dealer and local tuning shop have told me it's all normal. Part of the GT3 ownership experience I guess.
Post some pics if you can!

When it comes to sound and proven performance you need to consider our GMG World Challenge Sport header and cat system along with the center section.
Both proven designs..

Ok, first off, the sharkwerks bypass is the bomb. I installed mine myself and took a while, but can be done. The sound is surreal, who needs a radio with a bypass!
As for that sound in ur garage warming up sitting in neutral, its the lightweight flywheel. Also you will see blue smoke when u start it from time to time, you will hear the steering cables at low speeds, the radiators kick on, etc, etc. If you heard something grinding, i would worry and visit the dealer, otherwise its all normal. its a race car for the street and has very little insulation to the driver from raod noise and mechanical noise, but thats why we all love them.
As for RPM, higher revs create higher heat and valve wear over time, anyone who says it doesnt wasnt paying attention in their physics class, but thats what the car was engineered for. Unless you plan to drive the car 100k miles, i wouldlnt sweat it. I drive mine like a sport bike, always on the boil, so i never see 5th gear or higher, unless i am on a highway trip and conserving gas. Otherwise the needle sits at 4600 rpm and shes ready to play.
Good luck on the track, they are a scream, literally, on the track. If you never track this car, you really cant appreciate it for all that it is IMO.

My experiences...
I now have 2200 miles on mine, so I'm just 200 over the break in. Yes, I did what the factory recommended and saw no revs over 4200 for 2K miles. I've always been rewarded with trouble-free engines, good fuel economy (as good as it can be on a GT3), and NO oil consumption issues. I had plenty of fun between 3K - 4K, but admit that now I'm going further 'up the clock' it is an absolute hoot. I installed the SHARKSWERK bypass myself (the rear bumper cover is insanely easy to remove) and you will LOVE the sound. I also purchased their black LARGE baloney-sliced rear tips which add a real visual, aggressive look. Otherwise, I will not make a single other mod...just not my thing, and at least for me, none of them worth a dime beyond what I paid for the car. No funny noises, but did see the 'blue' smoke on start-up a few times as another posted noted....seems now to have gone away.
PS .....and on the radio thing, well fairly well known in my experience that Porsche factory radios have a lot of interference and connection issues. Was in the dealer one day with a woman whose new Cayenne could not hold a signal on any FM station without constant fade in and fade out. She was told she should just use her XM radio instead, that there was nothing they could do, was a factory design issue....wow, was my comment.
Not an issue for me as I only listen to the broadcast of KSHRKWRK radio, Alex Ross hosts a talk radio program on that channel. You can tune into the show by first installing the Sharkwerks bypass receiving antenna on the rear of the car, dial into the broadcast on ur radio dial via the sport mode button, roll your windows down and adjust the volume according to taste via your throttle! ROFLMAO.....works for me everytime....

Thanks all, I've been enjoying it so far, especially as of late. It's good to know all these noises are normal. I have seen the blue smoke on start up sometimes if I let it sit for a couple days.
I haven't had sugh a high reving engine built like this one before. Last toy was an Atom 300 with 7200rpm redline, but the little GM engine couldn't take higher revs for but a minute or two and even under normal driving it heatsoaked at 3k and just got worse so it spent most of its time at 2k. Really wasn't a well built car. So I was pretty wary about running the GT3 at higher revs. I was cringing keeping it at 3k so it stayed between 2k-3k and it really wasn't fun to drive like that. When I took it in for service I asked about it and they said don't worry about running it much higher all the time, you're boring it to death and it's built for it. Since then it's been a lot more fun, but still have to reteach my brain not to worry when I cruise even at 3k, but I've been working my way up. Gas mileage...bah, overrated
Good to know the sharkwerks was the right choice. The dealer said they do a lot of them and eveyone loves them. After seeing the videos I had to have one. Still debating if I want to unplug the bypass valve or not.
Here's a pic a buddy took. This was his first time shooting a moving car. It turned out pretty well though.

If you want/need to unplug that valve there's a write-up here which also shows the valve etc:
http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/techni...at-laguna.html
As far as the intake, leave that well enough alone. The only improvement I've seen is on the new RS with the second inlet but the decklid needs to be modified on your car to feed it so it's not a good option. You want to make sure you're getting cold air and not hot air from the engine which happens with some of those intake kits. The ECU tuning is great for folks that want an even more direct feel to the throttle (back to the cable days) vs the e-gas and delay. There's a few more ponies to be had but in truth the car has plenty of power for what it needs to do
We did spent a lot of time on our 2010 GT3 with tuning with the EVOMSit and managed to get another 10-12hp:http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/375-post2.html
In terms of driving I never shift below 3 at worst (and that's in traffic)... The engine wants to be rev'd and not lugged etc... so make sure you keep the revs up! Most of the time I go to redline (in my case 8800rpms) and as often as I can

On the radio, not sure which version/set up you have but to be honest reception is known for being pretty poor so I'd say that's normal. We just all listen to our exhaust:P
In terms of the squeal, I'm not sure when, where and how the noise shows up but there's certainly a few likely culprits. It's a noise-makin' machine with very little in the way of sound deadening so you'll pick up a few here and there

On the smoke, all gt3s smoke since there’s no check valve (unlike on the turbo) between the oil tank and the oil pump input in the block…
