Removing the steering wheel center cover

Does anyone know if the steering wheel center cover can be removed without using special tools? My 997 GT3 has developed a buzzing sound in that area and I would like to take care of this without taking the car to the dealer if possible.

derek k is infamous around these parts
Im sure you know that the center section of the wheel is the airbag. If you are reffering to the black round center section with the emblem on it, that can not be removed. If you do want to remove the airbag from the wheel first disconnect the neg. terminal on your battery. you should find 2 allen head or torx head bolts on the back of the wheel. loosen these and the airbag will come out. there will be an electrical connection, it can be unplugged without setting the airbag light as long as the battery is disconnected.

Are you experiencing a constant buzzing or buzzing when you turn the wheel?? I cant think of anything on the wheel that will cause a buzzing sound.

Thanks for the info! I am getting a rattling/buzzing sound when I hit bumps or on very uneven roads. It seems to come from the steering wheel area. It sounds like something I have to take to the dealer as I have absolutely no experience in this area.
