GT3: hub failure ?

Got a report from a southern french track where, this week-end, one of the participants in a new 997 GT3 (less than 2000 miles) broke a rear wheel hub and ended up in the gravel trap as a result. The guy stopped after feeling vibration in the rear wheel, inspected and thought he was just picking up rubber. When resuming his session, he found himself overtaken by his left rear wheel. Broken hub (not lug nuts).

There is rumor of another track incident where a GT3 got totalled due to similar failure.

Has anyone heard of similar incidents ? Sounds scary.
