Dont warm up the car on idle?

I was reading CGT manual and there it says not to warm up the car on idle. Start it and drive off.

Even though i usually prefer to warm up the cars when driving, sometimes i let them idle for a bit. It it harmful or something? Or do they mean dont assume the whole car is warmed up if you let it idle?

Yes, idling your car is harmful to the environment.

the worst time to run your engine is when it's cold and without much oil pressure (cold start idle)... I've always heard this is why german cars don't have remote start.

the manual says just drive until the operating temp gets to normal. i let my car run for 2-3 minutes. there was a good post on this subject a few months ago when the weather started to turn. i think it was in the 996tt forum. do a search you should be able to find it.

I think for enviornmental reasons as rr4 has stated but it also has to do with the various metals in the drivetrain that heat up at different rates. By driving the car (keeping rpms sub 4k) it is thought to warm the components equally.

I think all pcar manuals say the same thing. I let it idle for about 1 min (seatbelt, sunglasses,...) and then keep it in the sub 3K for until full warm-up.

umm, ive never let my cars idle, ..you should just drive them normally and let all of the parts warm up together, rather than some warm and some not.

My last Porsche 911 I always let it idle for about 3 minutes then drove it under 4K rpm until fully warmed up....then keep my right foot in it....hitting redline many times.....but I had to rebuild the engine at 250,000 miles.....oh well....
I drive my 996 the same way and at 54,000 miles I've never had a problem...except for 2 speeding tickets....
