The european press also has a lot more experience in 'gizmo' cars. As for all the probs these guys are having, that's the problem with gizmos. When I go to track days, the guys with the gizmos are spending all their time in the pits. A gizmo will never be my first choice for a track car. That's the beauty of the GT3 and the ACR. Simple, reliable, and fast.
So according to you, the Porsche 959 was a gizmo car....LOL.

And the technology that's trickled down to the 996tt like awd and twin turbos is also gizmo.

PASM, VVT on the 997TT....Traction control on most modern cars....all gizmos?

BTW last time I checked, the 997 GT3 was endowed with both PASM as well as traction control?

hahaha...you teaser.

Well, I hope you don't mind if I briefly tell you my experience with the GTR...but please don't tell anyone I told you.

I have driven, in some cases albeit briefly, R32, R33 and R34 GTR's.
I 've owned a 996tt for the previous 2 years and prior to that a C36 AMG for 8 years and for the previous 6 years, a number of 4wd turbo cars. I love german and Japanese performance cars.

The GTR is the most competent car I've driven.
I don't believe there is any disparity between media reviews of the R35
and the reality..however, I agree there has been too much hype.

All other things being equal, I wouldn't swap it for my 996tt.

I have seen the GTR obliterate the opposition for two years in Australian Touring car races.....cop weight penalties till it was around 1700kg in race trim and keep on winning.

Seventeen years later, if you take a look at road races like Targa Tasmania, R32 GTR's are still featuring in the top 20 ahead of more modern and fancied cars.

Bottom line, desire is in the eye of the beholder, but the GTR is one hell of a performance car and if I was a car enthusiast, I'd love to have one in my stable.

Leh, I've heard an Aussie R34 owner say that with around $25000 worth of mods, the R34 performance will be comparable to the R35.

What do you think?

Also, do you know what mods the One Lap A. 996tt you were competing against has?

given its not out in the wild yet in a significant way, perhaps we should wait until one can easily get into it free from any corporate control and reconvene in 18 months or 2 years and see where the GTR has gone and what everyone thinks at this point.
i suspect many will be slightly coy about their previous postings.

This is my point also. On some of the other threads I was "warning" the GT-R fans not to scream "Mission Accomplished!" so quickly, or they might be cleaning egg off there faces just as one of the "great" leaders of the free world is now having to do. The 930 Turbo has spent some 30 years developing it's reputation. The GT-R isn't here yet, and already they are proclaiming it the new "King" of the road. Yea, the Skyline has been around for a while, but this new car is worlds different from the past ones. It is still an unknown quantity. Speak too soon about a new king and you may have to eat crow later. Probably sooner than later.

Actually, the people most prone to eating crowe are those that have a poor knowledge base and can't help but unwittingly publicize this again and again....

Please tell me why anybody should listen to your "warnings"...have you got some access to information not available in the public domain?

If so, please convince a newspaper or a magazine to let them publicise your information asap so that it reaches and helps as many people as possible.

In this way, any journalist writing an article on the GTR from here on, will surely include a disclaimer to the effect that it's a great car
but USCCayman has looked into his crystal ball and has grave reservations about it ...so caveat emptor. LOL

Woah, looks like I have hit a raw nerve! Time will tell. But, it is already failing to live up to the super-hype. That is what this thread is all about.

It never ends does it?

Rafiki can you tell me how a car that is so new can be crowned so quickly? It takes more than mag numbers and many many years on the track to be crowned. Once again we are talking about the NEW R35 GT-R not the GT-R's of yesterday. A one pump chump doesn't get kudos from me. I want to see long term results before I crown anything..

No raw nerve here...it's all fun, really.

In all seriousness, we all know there is a lot of hype, but
sorry, there is no need to do the opposite of what the fanboys do
and hate, hate...I just think it reflects badly on Porsche drivers.

I agree with you!
I never crowned it as the new king of the hill.
Even if it is a little slower than either 997tt or GT3, it's still
a hell of a performance car.

Point taken about it being a new car. However, keep in mind that
other than the new engine, the rest of the technology is carried over(but improved) from the older models.

In relation to long term results, come on, Nissan wants to sell the GTR...NOW.
Not in 2-5 years time! It's unfair to place a burden of long term proof
on any car from a reputable manufacturer.

We are not talking about a boutique car maker here.
Nissan has invested heavily in this car and it will support it with warranty etc.
and will no doubt improve on any problems, if and when they exist as quickly as possible...
that's all that can be expected of them.

Don't mean to **** anyone off, but it does get a little annoying listening
to nothing more than vacuous posts that convey nothing except negativity...not referring to you BTW.

Incidentally, I have a fractured wrist and will be off work for at least two months,
which explains my increased activity here. It's fun posting here, hope others feel the same.

I think long term results do exist, but shouldn't always feature as burdens of proof for intending purchasers. In new markets and for anything but established
manufacturers, I think it is very reasonable that they are an important consideration.

I can see a GT3 in my future..and if and when I do own one, it will be exactly because of it's long term standing as a track car, its heritage and LOOKS!

That its performance will be improved upon in 5 years will not make any difference to my purchase, because of its other two assets...looks and heritage.

Z07 I think HC has already explained that the RE070 has a treadware of 140 vs PS2 is 220. The lower the number the stickier the tire compound. The RE070 is much closer to the AO48R (treadward of 80) than the PS2.
