As an idle observer of this thread and hearing what Leh has as personal cars (including something from a mfgr that is not even discussed here) he would be THE EPITOME of a NONFANBOI --- just a car guy. I love it Leh. Keep posting facts from REAL WORLD DRIVING experiences.

Best of luck man.

Here here- I agree 100%. Leh, thanks for putting up with some of the egos here to post your informed opinion.

I have to admit I don't particularly like the GT-R. Too heavy to be my kind of car... But I respect it. And I'd note that most of the guys that don't respect it have never driven One Lap, never driven a GT-R, and thus are largely spouting opinions with little to base them on. Your posts make for a refreshing change in that your opinions are both informed and based on personal experience.

Very sorry to hear about your crash- those night stages are always brutal. Good to hear you made it out OK- a couple years back an acquaintance parked a 700 hp viper under a semi at night in one lap, so just remember it could have been much worse...

I'm interested in gauging your opinion on the matter.
oh dayum... another one from nagtroc.org?

Well, I hope you don't mind if I briefly tell you my experience with the GTR...but please don't tell anyone I told you.

I have driven, in some cases albeit briefly, R32, R33 and R34 GTR's.
I 've owned a 996tt for the previous 2 years and prior to that a C36 AMG for 8 years and for the previous 6 years, a number of 4wd turbo cars. I love german and Japanese performance cars.

The GTR is the most competent car I've driven.
I don't believe there is any disparity between media reviews of the R35
and the reality..however, I agree there has been too much hype.

All other things being equal, I wouldn't swap it for my 996tt.

I have seen the GTR obliterate the opposition for two years in Australian Touring car races.....cop weight penalties till it was around 1700kg in race trim and keep on winning.

Seventeen years later, if you take a look at road races like Targa Tasmania, R32 GTR's are still featuring in the top 20 ahead of more modern and fancied cars.

Bottom line, desire is in the eye of the beholder, but the GTR is one hell of a performance car and if I was a car enthusiast, I'd love to have one in my stable.
rafiki,
this is an excellent post far removed from the tit for tat and usual diatribe on this topic and just wanted to say so.

my friends 800hp R32 is still one of my most favourite cars of all time on pure driving experience, the interior still gives underwhelming a new meaning though ha ha. i do find it in standard..or standard..ish form to be completely underwhelming though. i remember going into one for the first time, in mild tuned form, loaded with so much expectation and it neither feeling fast or going fast. it made a lot of fuss but was slower than my subaru by a long ways though it shouldnt have been on paper.
i find the later ones less raw than the R32 which keeps it filling a place in my heart for sure. their race pedigree and scalps is something of which im only too aware and yet i still find many who have no idea for some unknown reason.

just to clear up, my thoughts ref reconvening in two years time to revist the GTR and this topic wasnt meant in terms of where everything else, including future facelifts will have moved to but where this current car will have ended up after the dust settles and daily use catches up, after laps are won and lost.
will it hold a place amongst peoples hearts, an all conquering hero or a tame and faded memory with a cheap interior and massive depreciation.
it can be a fine line between either in a very fickle world.

Quote: Leh, I've heard an Aussie R34 owner say that with around $25000 worth of mods, the R34 performance will be comparable to the R35.

What do you think?

Also, do you know what mods the One Lap A. 996tt you were competing against has?

well.. ive drivin both r34 and r35 stock for stock... and i can tell you that the 34 doesn't even come close to the performance.... first of all.. it has 280hp.. and little tires.... and at this point.. the design is 10 years old...

i have close to about 25k mods into my car... and of course was comparing both of them.... The only thing that the new one does much better then mine is handling.. mostly power down... mine doesn't use its power as well getting it to the wheels... the handling of the R35 is better... i think mostly due to the coilovers i have.... which i plan to change one day.. i have non ajd shocks.. they are Beilstein... but the spring rates and shock are off....

my car is faster in a straight line.... as it is making over 600awhp... but the powercurve isnt nearly as good as the new one... soooo.. till 100mph.. i could see both the cars pretty much even... then mine would pull...

i have stock techs.. so the braking is fairly close.... my car is a little lighter.. but has less tire..... the R35 brakes seem to be its weakest point.... i felt as if it could brake better... but i guess its stock pads.. and im sure they were worn a little.... the braking of it wasnt very crisp....

i didnt get into any highspeed stuff in the r35.. so i can talk about aero... but the 34 has a ajd rear wing.... and i have a nice splitter.... also under body carbon diffuser and such... as well as the r35 has...

the R35 is MUCH easier to drive then my car... as the awd system takes a little longer to react.... its not to hard to be into a rwd induced oversteer.. then the next thing you know your in a pretty big slide but you awd now... and you better hold on....

1 lap to 1 lap i think my 34 would be faster... BUT.. over a 10 lap race.. i think the 35 would be faster.. assuming it doesn't waist its tires... which seems to be happening to Tony.. because the car is so heavy...

sooo..... with 25k mods... if we are just talking about speed... you could make a 34 much faster... but if your talking about a good all around car... daily drivable and fast and reliable on a road course... i think you would need about 25k to make a 34 equal to that of a stock 35.....

the 996tt is a very well setup car....

it has around 650-700 hp......

they have owned the car for over 5 years now.. and the suspension tune is very good....

it is a wide body... front and rear fenders are wider....

it has a nice rear wing setup...

nice brakes...

lightened up...

a different center dif

its reliable... and fast... and Davia knows what he is doing.. to make it win....

today the viper spun on track... so Davia now can go in cruise mode for the win...

also we heard the vipers tires are pilot sport CUP compound.... not the PS2 compound...

apparently the viper ACR gets this compound just for it.. stock or something.... we are looking into this more..

Quote: This is my point also. On some of the other threads I was "warning" the GT-R fans not to scream "Mission Accomplished!" so quickly, or they might be cleaning egg off there faces just as one of the "great" leaders of the free world is now having to do. The 930 Turbo has spent some 30 years developing it's reputation. The GT-R isn't here yet, and already they are proclaiming it the new "King" of the road. Yea, the Skyline has been around for a while, but this new car is worlds different from the past ones. It is still an unknown quantity. Speak too soon about a new king and you may have to eat crow later. Probably sooner than later.

right... and the nissan GTR has been around for over 40 years there champ....

with countless race wins...

when will people just not post.. when they dont know anything.. or dont do research....

and this car is not much dif then the last one... and you say WORLDS?

2 door
turbo
6 cylinder
AWD
mostly rwd with electronic center dif
carbon rear undertray
flat bottom front
front engine
based on a coupe platform
tuned at Nurburgring
the list could go on...

the only real big dif is the transmission.. other then that.. its essentially the exact same car.. but 10 year later design using technology to improve itself...

i will say it again tho.. u guys are sticking your foot in your mouth.. just wait till you drive it...

it really is that good..

Ian hit a cone at BMW center.. he was faster then me.. but the cone was a 10sec penalty... another car also was faster but hit a cone too... so we got handed 2nd.... i guess u can say handed... i mean i was good and drove extra carefull knowing the big penalty...

the GTR did do well.. considering the track was very naro... i put each tire off atleast once in my 2 laps....

also... today at VIR.. the owner... Peter.. drove the car...

Ian will drive the rest of the event from now on.... and you will most likely see the gt3 faster then the gtr...

I talked to Mary today and after she has been living in the car for the past 5 days.. she sais she absolutely loves it... and she doenst even get to drive it fast...

They comes stock with the Cups, but the ACR they are racing with has the PS2's. Officials would not allow Cups to be used.

You hear a lot of 'reliable' data that seems to be BS. The removed the cup tires and put standard PS2s on it. And good thing they did. The viper would of had no chance at TWS in that much rain on R compounds.

You sure enjoy talking about a lot of rumors that pertain to the viper and most of them end up being false.

I have to agree with this one, I'm sure plenty of people would be up in arms if the Viper got to run MPSC. They are easy to tell from PS2's especially for Porsche and now Vette guys who run them. It's easy to go take a look, but whoever this reliable source is, is starting to say some stuff that's borderline rediculous.

The viper does come with MPSC, but if it werent on them, people could look and tell, and know for sure, it wouldnt be a rumor from a secret guy at this point.

Go take a look at them. And just read the sidewall.

PS2

MPSC
