Clear bra is worth it!
Thought I'd share my positive experience with protective film (and how nice it looks... or how you can't see it!).
I got my car pre-owned, but the paint was in excellent condition, so I looked into protective films and chose a custom wrap from Premier on the whole front end. Here's the inspiring thread at that time:

Since then, everything has held up very well. The front end and bumper wraps still look the same (or invisible!). So, yes, I did spend some money on the custom wrap, but I gotta tell ya, Premier did an excellent job with the edges and folds such that one could barely see or find them. All in all, very happy with the results and protection.

But quickly, there are a variety of film installers out there throughout the country, and I believe most are independent, private installers who work with high end car dealerships (P, F, Lambo). Based on recommendations from friends and reviews of others on 6speed, I had mine done at Premier based in Fremont, CA (plus, I'm in the SF bay area so they're close by... but they do travel, my friend in LA got his M5 done when they did a tour to LA).
Skill required? I guess that depends on your risk appetite, you and a friend or two's surgical skillfulness with your hands (try wrapping a bumper by yourself, or with your gf/wife), your desire to use a "pre-cut" kit vs. having it custom wrapped (so minimal edges show), and your resourcefulness as it relates to tools needed (do you have syringes for bubbles, etc.?).
I think costs will vary greatly depending on car due to how much material is used and time need to install (I've seen numbers in the hundreds upward to thousands), what exactly you want wrapped (the whole car? just the front bumper? the whole front end?), and if you choose a pre-cut kit vs. a custom job (latter more expensive of course).
