996 GT3 to 997 GT3RS Conversion
No that would probably take a whole day.

Joe , congrats on bringing it all together so well(and quickly !) . I have followed posts from the first day and have a lot of questions !! A lot not clear from photos and posts.
At the front of the car-- were 997 panels and bonnet a simple bolt on? If not- what had to be done to get them to fit?
Why did you not use 997 doors? Where would they not fit?
Were rear 1/4 panels compatible with inners?
TIA

Thanks, and yes it is gratifying to look at the original pics and the latest ones. I think back on all of the work and you feel like you did accomplish something special.

To begin with I posted a lot of the things we did, but also left out a lot of the details to not bore everyone. But here are a few more.
1) 1/4 panels we originally were going to just modify the 996 inners to fit the 997 outers, but determined it wouldn't be worth the time and wouldn't ever be really the right way to do it. So we replaced both the inner and outer with the 997 panels. Now the 997 inners did fit the 996 tub just perfect, just weld and glue on.
2) Fenders and hood did not just bolt on. Hood hinges need to be welded modified and bodyworked, using 997 top of the hinge which bolts to the hood and 996 bottom portion which bolt to the inner fender. Basically you are kind of making your own new hinge. Now I would love to say that after spending $1000 on Misha's conversion fenders you could just bolt them on prime and paint, but that wasn't the case. You either need to cut the jam area out of the Misha's fiberglass fenders or cut the hood. We chose to modify the fenders, which actually took an extensive amount of time. Now Green Turbo decided to cut his hood on his 996tt to 997tt conversion. I think now he wished he had moded his fenders because you will probably see more of the hood to fender jam in the area he cut the hood, and it is more difficult to change the hood. Now I am not bashing Misha's fenders, the rest of them fit very well including the headlight area. Just more stuff at this point in time that you will have to deal with when doing the conversion. Radiator ducts RT and LT can fit, not perfect but they can be mounted, but the center is way off and I didn't use it. Don't forget about the wiring also, every plug and socket is different also.
3) Doors I am not sure about and I didn't have any used or new ones lying around. I decided to do what was done before, but I think the pillar area would be different since the windshield is different. I also believe the rake of the windshield is different which effects the a pillar. Good question though would have been a lot easier to use the 997 door, but then what goes on with the interior? I do think also by looking at the car that where doors meet the quarters on the 996 is narrower than at the same point on the 997 which makes the bodywork difficult on the quarter install but also accentuates those RS hips.
I didn't know it was taken away by a forklift, wow. Yeah, hopefully you can see it someday. Here are some more pics I took earlier today.
Oh and as far as tire size I went with 20's, I know I know but they just fit the car perfectly to me, and I will have a set of different track wheel and tire setup. Rears are 325/25/20 and front is 245/30/20. It drives great, no rubbing, but we did do some additional clearancing and relocating. The wheel and tire combo probably doesn't weigh much more than stock. I just had the car weighed today, it was 3100lbs. That is decent right?

3100lbs is really good.
It is the same tail. I just put it on my stock 2002 for the time, which it happened to be the same color. I had the red wheels on it to for a period of time also, before I sold them to BruceM.
I love the tail, looks very retro. I don't think the small tail helped the situation out at all, and may have contributed to the crash. Not much down force.

You will need quite a few things. Conversion fenders, 997 hood, front bumper, headlights, upper and lower grilles in bumper, radiator ducts, front wiring harness, hood hinges (which need to be modified welded and bodyworked), relocate your evap hoses and canister, modify the rocker area at the bottom of the back of the fender if you use the conversion fenders, and modify fender liners, and modify inner fenders. In all a decent amount of work CP.
Thanks for the info. That does sound like a good dose of shop work. If I send a car to you for this work, do you have an order-of-magnitude/ball-park estimate for the work, labor+parts of course.
Thanks again.

it is just exhilarating to see the finished project!
