The 996 RS values were dropping quite badly a while back, but I think the 997 RS has increased the level of interest in Porsche's RS cars generally. Combine that with very tight supply of 997s, and the value of 996s has firmed considerably.

The 996 RS is seen as somewhat harder than the 997 - rather less useable on the road, but if anything more useable on track if for no other reason that the fact that it is slightly quieter and therefore is allowed onto many more tracks than the 997.
