smoke coming out of my exhaust

I think I added too much oil. Is this normal or will it do any harm?

It depends how much you over filled. If it's too much ie: 1qt or more, the oil can foam and cause real engine damage since the oil pumps can't pump foam/froth. How much did you add??? On a full drain, I put 9.5 qts in and maybe topped it up by 1/4 qt more after bringing the car up to temp and taking a measurement.

If it were me and I wasn't sure how much I put in, I would drian it and start over...I don't think burning it off would be good for the exhaust system and perhaps not the motor either

edit: I suppose you could drain off a qt or so from the drain plug, but you would need a new crush ring for the plug to make sure you have a tight seal and take a measurement and top off if needed.

I checked my oil dipstick just prior to taking a weekend trip to the Desert(Indian Wells) and noticed that the oil level was way below the first mark. I got worried and poured in 2 quarts of Mobil 1 0-40W.

BTW, Chris, love what you've done to your car and respect all your posts.

When you did that check, I assume the car was running and the oil was up to temp??? You cannot measure the oil when the car is off...I assume you know that already, just want to make sure. 2 qts. is way to much. Look at the manual. It will tell you how the dip stick reading relates to the amount of oil to put in.

PS: You shouldn't be losing that much oil in the first place. Sounds like you may have read the dip stick with the car off. If so...don't drive it until you drain those 2 qts. off. That WILL cause a big problem....Hope this helps....

Chris,
You're right. I should have checked the manual. I checked the dipstick when the engine was not running, but the car was just driven. The difference between the 2 marks is about 1.1 liter. Also, car drove ok during 250mi. roundtrip from the desert, and I drove it pretty hard as there were many open straights and twisties going to Palm Springs. There were white smoke coming from the exhaust only, and only when the I start the engine from off or low idle. I will take it in to the dealer tomorrow to have the oil drain.

Thanks,
Tony
