it looks like the 17-85 has been revised since I owned it several years ago ni remember a green stripe around the lens. The 17-55 is also a fixed f2.8 lens. You'll be able to shoot in lower light scenarios with that. The 17-85 is f4-5.6 iirc. If it were me, I'd save for the 2.8 lens.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Low light is important so I think i'd go with the better more costly one.

Exactly why I got the 17-55. While I give up a little in zoom, the low light shooting is terrific. With a bunch of megapixels, I can make up for the less zoom with a crop on the computer. It's the closest thing I could find to an "all around" lens. I RARELY take it off to use a different lens.

The 40D with this lens is a much better lens/camera setup than I am a photographer.....not unlike how my car is capable of more performance than I am....LOL
