997.2 Safety Upgrades
997.2 Safety Upgrades
I decided to upgrade the safety aspect of my car, since I'm keen to track it hard (and wicked fast). I purchased Porsche's carbon fiber race seats. These have cutouts in the headrest and seat bottoms that are designed for a racing harness. I purchased a 6 point harness for driver and passenger. In order to secure the harness, and keep my head in case of a roll over, I installed a custom roll bar that was fabricated by a local race shop. I also got a head and neck restraint (HANS) device to compliment my new carbon fiber helmet.
This was only my 3rd track day with the new car. It was a little bit of an adjustment switching from the stock seats to these, since they sit a little higher than I'm used to, plus they are much more straight up and down than I'm used to (and have zero tilt adjustment). This was also my first time in my new HANS and six-point harness. The HANS hits the seat back and prevents my head from going back as far as I'd like. But, it didn't seem too cumbersome once I was on track. I dropped another 2-1/2 seconds off my time in my first session of the day. Confidence is key to this sport!
