Try first.

It doesn't matter sport 1 or 2 or for that matter professional or not. Once it is strapped to your shoulder you don't feel any weight either way. Save the cash buy a standard sport hans and buy a better helmet.

+1 to the above post.

Try them on. I wear a 17" shirt and according to their sizing I was right between a M and a L. The M was too tight but the L fits great.

Make sure you get the sliding tethers. I also agree that there is no real benefit for the carbon fiber model, just get the standard model.

I would suggest putting your savings into a cool shirt system.

Get fitted. You have enough good shops in your area to help you with the correct fitting.

Also look around as prices vary quite a bit on these.

My $.02:
This is the first year that SCCA has required them for Club racing.
So, I now use one when racing. I do find that, ever so slightly, it limits my ability to turn my head. I don't like that, but when racing, I have no choice. For HPDE's I do not use the HANS device.

There is a new 'adjustable' HANS

http://hansdevice.com/Hans-Device-Adjustable-Series

It does not adjust for width, but the ability to adjust for angle is a bonus if you move from car to car.
