Where does one go to find these for sale? I need a track car and this looks like fun. Any info would be helpful.

good luck getting one though? havnt all the 997's been taken already?

best bet is to get a used one to learn about the car then go to the hardcore 997 (no abs, sequential shifter etc)

Most of the good ones have been snapped up for the new IMSA Cup series, still a few around. Try the PCA Club Racing Website's "Mart" section or Farnbacher-Loles Motorsports in Conn.

Whatever you do, if you get ANY used race car, get the thing inspected and "signed-off" by a shop that not only services Cup cars, but also builds them. Have all the seam welds checked closely, have it run over with a fine tooth comb. Many race cars have hidden degredation that isn't discovered until it's torn down after a a shunt or when doing a major component replacement. Better to discover everything up front, so you don't have to pay more later for a repair. It's definitely doable to find a good used race car, just do your homework and make sure the car is inspected to the "nth" degree. Good luck, and enjoy yourself out on track!

Oh, one last thing, get a side HR (head restraint) seat and hans device. If you're running without a side HR seat, you're risking your life. Don't do it. IMO, if you run a "sprint car" center net instead of the side HR seat, your head would have to travel 12"-18" inches to hit it, and that's before any deformation or stretch of the net (however small) occurs. Your corotid and other vessels in the neck cannot withstand extreme stretch, and with your body harnessed-in, that's what you're subjecting your neck to laterally without the side HR seat--so don't risk it.

The Racers Group usually has a few cup cars they are looking to move. If not, surely they can find one for you. You could also try some of the other race teams that run/support cup cars like Kelly Moss, TPC, Orbit, NGT, Foreign Affairs, Autometrics, and Foreign Affairs. Importing from Europe may also be a route to consider.

Bringing something over from Europe might also be worth checking into. Try Konstantine at www.gt3cup.com .

 

There is already a deposit on that one and it should be a completed deal by the end of today. I know this b/c the olde man is making a final inspection of it today.

 

There is a reason that they have a lot for sale . . most knowledgeable racers go elsewhere. I had a friend seriously look into their selection late last year - not acceptable for the price asked. It is a good place to sell to rich, novice suckers.

Find a POC, PCA or other racer looking to upgrade to the 997 next year. There should be some on the market.

Please have someone who really knows what to look for check them out. Or you might not get what you think you are.

Rennlist classifieds has been a good place to find Cup cars. You will note a major Cup team with cars for sale, currently with a 2006 997 Cup posted for $200,000! If you go to their site you will see they have a number of 996's available as well. I know two people who have purchased cars from Konstantine and have found he was honest and they got what was promised.

Also the back of Autoweek. Many sell word of mouth, so check with your local PCA members. Look at PCA classified's as well. Michael Lederman in LA has had some in the past. PMNA doesn't have anything and 997 Cup allocation is spoken for for 2006 cars and most of the 2007's, unless you are making a full race season commitment to them (for 2007 cars).

The 2004 and 2005 cars are the most sought after and will be pricey. In 2003 you got adj. shock upgrades from 2002. In 2002 you got stiffer chasis. So 2000 - 2001 got cable shifter. The 1998 & 1999's are the cheapest. Buy a 2002 or newer if you can find one in your budget. You will find many of the 2002's have been updated with shocks and the engine intake from the 2004's.

Key issue is to know how many hours or miles on engine and transmission. One car may look expensive, but if everything is fresh it may actually be cheaper than another car when you factor in the cost of an upcoming rebuild. Make sure any rebuilds were done by PMNA or a major shop, with a good reputation. Also factor in spares, extra wheels etc... You will want at least 2 sets of wheels.

I have a 2005, (not for sale), had a 2003 and a 2001 before that. Buy one you will love it! Be patient and find the right car at the right price! Good luck.
