Trofeo R vs Pilot Sport Cup vs R888
Trofeo R vs Pilot Sport Cup vs R888
Hi, guys:
My Pilot Sport Cup N1+ on my 997.2 3.8 GT3RS is almost done.
So I wonder how do you guys rate Trofeo R vs Pilot Sport Cup vs R888 for track and road?

I'd suggest taking a look over on the Rennlist 997 GT3 forum. Search the three types. Lots of discussion, but the consensus seems to be:
Trofeo R: not a lot of people have used them yet. Those that have say they are very sensitive to pressures and like camber. Good wear, great grip.
Pilot Sport Cup: good compromise tire for track/street. Don't last very long; very expensive.
R888: Most polarizing, hated tire amongst the GT3 set. At nearly half the cost, almost worth trying to build your own opinion.
For serious track duty, consider spare 18" wheels, Hoosiers and/or NT-01's.
For Cars and Coffee and weekend drives on the street, consider RE-11's, Hankook RS3's, Michelin Super Sports.

I've run for years on either MPSC (Michelin Sport Cup N Spec) or Toyo R888.
MPSC are around 3 seconds slower than R888 at Sebring. MPSC N Spec also tend to chunk rubber off the tire too.
Toyo R888 is not the perfect tire but is often miss understood. You need to run the R888 at lower psi than the older much loved RA1. RA1 needs to be shaved to work but then you get only around 5-6 track days from it. R888 can start out at full tread and you get 5-6 days from it and still have tread left but it's heat cycled out.
Pirelli Trofeo for 19" use cost around $1700 a set which is $600 less than MPSC and $500 more than R888. I know people than run Trofeo and they are faster than all other street R-Comps except Hoosier R6 but are reported to only be about 1-2 seconds off a Hoosier R6.
None of these tires make a good street tire at all but can be driven to a 1-2 hour away track and back home. For street use get the Michelin Super Sports.
