Track day tires question..

Hey guys Merry Xmas
I didnt make the gt3 club, i wound up buying a Cayman R but its working for me right now while im learning the ropes of tracking.. ( still buying an RS one day)
Question for the track guys, if your not trailering to and from, what track tires are you running with for track days?
I live about 2 hours from my local track.. I hear different things about driving on certain tires vs not doing it at all...
Can i get some input on what tires to buy and possibly leave on or i can swap out at my house and drive to the track... The car is not a daily driver, its a toy..
thanks

I am not the world's biggest expert, but.....

For all around street and track, the Super Sports have gotten great reviews on the forum and from folks I know. I am putting a set on this week as a matter of fact. I know others that are running the Super Sports but have an extra set of rims with Hoosiers that are changed out at the house and not driven far to the track. 2 hours may be a bit far to pull that off, so I would just run with a street/track tire setup unless you get a trailer.

BTW, the Cayman R is great - I wish I could have both a Cayman R and a GT3! The Cayman R with PDK would be a great place to cut your teeth on tracking. Have you chewed through the tires that came on the car new already?

If you are just starting stay on street tires. I would also recommend the Michelin PSS for an all round street/track tire good grip in both dry and wet conditions.

I have. Gt3 rs and have been using the stock Michelin Pilot Sport Cups for both street duty and track days. I drive to the track and adjust tire pressures for best performance. I like em a lot. Not good in the rain. I also have adjusted the camber and toe for track performance. This makes the tires wear faster. I got 2,600 miles from my rears before changing them. Have fun.

Most of the guys around here who seriously track a Boxster or Cayman and also want to drive to the track use Nitto NT01's.

Nitto NT01's are about the same performance as the Toyo RA1 (r compound). If they have the correct sizes definitely go for them! BUT, know that they won't last on the streets and will heat cycle out real soon, so you should mount them on a different set of wheels.

Regular street tires which are usually suggested for Track Days are: Bridgestone Potenza RE-11, Michelin Pilot Super Sport, Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08.

Hope it helps! Good luck

StockKiller, where in Florida do you live? What group do you run in at the track?

If you are starting out stay on stock street tires. If you are experienced and solo then you would probably know what tires to use by seeing what others are using at the track.

The reason people say stay on street stock tires is they talk back to you more and provide a cushion of control before they break lose. Also a beginner will be wasting money on r-compound street based tires because youmwontmhavebthe skill, yet to use the grip.

If you are in the Tampa area and would like to get together I can help, you, out with all of this.

But to answer your question....get a second set of wheels and if Nitto N1 come in your sizes use those...if not use Michelin Pilot Sport Cup or Pirelli Trofeo

IMO, you should hold off on tires like the Cups and go with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I have them on my car and they are really good on and off track. At the FATT Instructor Appreciation Day (held on 12/3/11) I was able to pretty much keep up with a GT3 that had Hoosiers!!
Don't think you can go wrong with the Super Sports.

Trofeo R vs Pilot Sport Cup vs R888

Hi, guys:

My Pilot Sport Cup on my 997.2 3.8 GT3RS is almost done.

So I wonder how do you guys rate Trofeo R vs Pilot Sport Cup vs R888 for track and road?

StockKiller...I'm at Sebring this weekend....pm me your contact info.

HKFEVER, For track use the Trofeo is so much better than Pilot Sport Cups at the track. For street use and maybe a track day or 2 just use the new Michelin Super Sports. Toyo R888 is much better than Pilot Sport Cups...this is the N Spec Pilot Sport Cups....non N Spec is a different story.
