I need help choosing GT3RS/997.2 Turbo

I need help guys, I have a 2006 Carrera non S , with coilovers, sway bars and when I track it I put the Pagid pads yellow r29 and r compound tires. I feel it’s time to upgrade my ride but I am torn between getting a 997.2 turbo or a 2010 gt3RS. I love driving fast both on and off the track so the turbo is very appealing to me plus there are tons of mods to make it go faster. But on the track I see how the best and fastest cars there are usually GT3’s plus having an RS makes the car standout more and rarer. I am posting this on both forums just to see what kind of feedback I will get. Anyone else who had the same dilemma and choose one over the other? I would love to hear why. Thanks

I had this exact same dilemma just a month ago and my insights should help hopefully.

I had a 997.1 TT which I purchased last year. While fast in a straight line, it lacked character and predictability. Had massive understeer, the front end was very "floaty" at high speeds not inspiring a lot of confidence, and I really wasn't happy with the turbo lag, as little as there is, compared to the rawness and urgency of an NA engine. The turbo has gobs of torque though and shoots like a bat out of hell once the boost hits.

I traded in the TT just recently for a 997.2 GT3 RS. I don't regret my decision for a second, prob what I should have done in the first place. The RS is much more predictable with its precision handling and amazing NA engine, not to mention the sound! It is much more fun to drive and inspires much more confidence. I plan on tracking the RS occasionally, but have found the car to be very docile on public roads. If you can, get the front lift option on the RS.

Trust me, get the RS. You will not regret your decision.

GT3/RS is definitely a better driving experience on the track and in the mountains. But, the turbo would be a better daily driver. A turbo on the track is heavy, floats and really doesn't handle as well compared with a GT3/RS, and quite honestly, the exhaust note of a GT3/RS is worth the price of admission.

And, who really needs to drive fast on public roads. Save it for the track.

Not even close - if your using it on the track, it's the GT3.

Amen

Couldn't have said it better.....have had both cars and you can see which one is the keeper.

Same experience

Ditto. This is exactly how and why I got into my RS. All my life since I was 7 years old I wanted a Porsche and thought the top of the heap would be the Turbo as its gets so much press and you see more of them. But after years of road racing bikes, it's just wasn't razors edge enough for me even on backroads at modest speeds, it simply lacked the feedback I was used to and the soulful cry of a NA engine. I took one ride in an RS and realized the error of buying my turbo and made the move. N the Turbo is a great car, but know thyself and you can decide whether what is said here applies to you or not is my advice.

Another vote for the RS. Turbo is a compromise that you'll be fighting with if you take it to the track regularly. Leave it to say, there are many times I wish I had just spent a bit more money and got the GT3 instead of my X51.

How are you likely to mod the car, power or suspension or both? You obviously like to drive the car a lot on the street and the Turbo will be more comfortable unless you change the suspension to a much stiffer setup. On the flip side, the GT3RS will be far superior on the track, even versus the modified Turbo. However, you can turn the Turbo into a very fun track car with some suspension changes, though it'll still be heavier and not offer the same feedback as the GT3.

The biggest differentiator to me would be the first question I asked on mods. If you're likely to want to go the high HP route then the Turbo is the only way to go. I faced the same dilemma myself, but unlike the other posters here I went with the Turbo because I wanted the power you can't get with an NA engine, especially here at high altitude. Sometimes I wish I had the better feedback and lightness of a GT3 and have considered swapping my Turbo, but every time I feel the power in the car it erases the questions in my mind. I'm at stage 3 with an X50 package, exhaust with 100 cell cats, piping/intake changes, and supporting protune. On the handling/braking side I have Eibach sways and DOT4 brake fluid with stainless lines. I haven't gone the way of coilovers yet because of ride height issues I already have driving a lot of places. Just changing the sways made a night and day difference, and I know lots of guys that track their Turbos and with coilovers or a high quality spring/shock combo they're extremely happy with the cars. These tend to be the guys like me that drive their cars a lot on the street too, and tend to go for high HP (600+).

My car sees 6-10 track days a year plus some auto-x, and is driven semi-regularly on the street, probably around 75-100 days a year.

Without question, the RS. I was in the market for a turbo when I sold my C4S Cab and test drove both cars. I found the GT3 a whole lot more exciting and raw than the turbo. The turbo had a lot of power when spooled up, but I really like the handling and immediate response of the GT3. If you like to go to the track, then the RS is the way to go, but even the street is a blast in these cars. My dream is a 4.0 RS, but no lotto winnings as of yet.....Get the RS and don't look back. Chicks dig the noise and the big wing

RS for sure if you are into tracking your car. Rs seems to hold the value higher than the turbo.
