A tough choice: 997 RS MK1 or MK2
A tough choice: 997 RS MK1 or MK2
So, i finally decided to go and take a head first dive into the world of Porsche.
After testdriving a 3.8L RS yesterday, i am absolutely in love.
i know this mk1 vs mk2 deal has been discussed here many times.
but here is the deal. my budget hoovers around 100-110 grand in Euros.
and i would get a pretty nice and clean mk1 for that kind of money. but i now also got offered a 3.8 for that kind of money.
its done ca. 11.000 km
it did have an accident, as it was used in the Porsche Sportscup race series.
but it was all proffessionally repaired by porsche. and it also had a full trans and engine overhaul by porsche. its also equipped with the full cage and comes with 3 sets of wheels. of course it has the porsche approved warranty.
BUT i just dont know if i can make friends with the white/red design. and its just completely empty. so no Boxes ticked at all. no AC no nothing.
alltho i do plan to use it on the track ( maybe 6-7 trackdays a year ) it would also be something to treat myself on a nice summers day.
but on the other hand. i do prefer the 3.6's looks. especially in orange
but it doesnt have the nifty PSM. so i would probably do a uniball conversion, KW clusport coilovers, solid motormounts and a 4.0 clutch.
and it would be a car i plan to keep for some time ( we are talking 4-5 years )
also my main question is, how big is the difference in performance between the two. I am coming from an M3 so i know either car will be a big leap in performance. but how do they compare ?
thank you guys in advance

i say both cars have their pros and cons. depends on what you main purpose of getting the car is.
if you were going to track the car heavily, the 997.2 is a better choice. the full cage is a plus for track days and having 3 sets of wheels is handy because you can swap from street tires to track tires easily. and of course the extra grunt of the larger engine is always welcomed, the 3.8L car will always be faster than the 3.6L.
if you are planning to drive mostly on the street, with some back road driving or driving around town. i say go for the 997.1 car. the fact that you can get one with no accident history is better since it would make resale a little easier. lots of people walk away from cars as soon as they hear the word 'accident'; no matter how well it was repaired in the past. the 3.6L is PLENTY fast for the street. you will never get close the limits of this car. i drive it on local back roads all the time and the car has enough power to scare myself. also being able to get the special green or orange colours is a huge plus... when i go to town with other GT3s, my green 997.1 RS gets the most looks. people are always crowding around the car and trying to take pictures of it despite the fact that my car is 5 years old!

i have RMS issues. its been to the dealer before for RMS replacement under warranty. however, it continued to leak. it still leaks now. its really not a big deal. it leaks about 1 or 2 drops per day so over the course of a week you get a small puddle of oil but nothing major. just keep an eye on your oil levels periodically and you wont have to worry bout a thing. i rarely even have to top up my oil between oil changes.
if you dont track that much, i still think the 997.1 RS would be a better option for you. the orange one will look awesome. i think it will age better over the long term. however, if your priority is speed then you'll need the 3.8L engine to get every ounce of speed out of the 997 chasis.
either way, there's no wrong answer to this question. you are lucky to have to make a decision like this.
Born and raised just outside of Munich. I will be moving back there in December and I'm taking my GT3 with me

Well, i always say i dont go for the last 10th of a second....i go for smiles per gallon

the thing with the GT3's here in germany is quite weird
you basically never ever see them on the street. i think i i once saw an orange mk1 rs and a white mk2 rs in my area. but as soon as you go to a trackday. they are everywhere
haha But yes i guess you're right. i will probably be going for a mk1 RS. i think that will be all the speed i need.
thank you a lot for the input

Just slightly off topic, but have you thought about giving a 996TT seal a shot? I've read that there has been success in using them to stop the RMS issue. On another side note, I'm from Vancouver and almost never see GT3RS'. They're much a much rarer spot than the usual Ferrari/Lambo/Aston. Too bad you left! I've never seen a green RS. I might be making a trip out to Montreal at some point, however, as I go to school in Kingston, Ontario. Perhaps I'll be lucky enough to spots yours; it would be hard to miss!
I am actually moving to the Toronto area for work this summer so you might just spot me running around. Lol. As far as I know I am the only green RS in Montreal but I think Toronto has at least one other green RS running around.
The TT seal might work but because my first RMS replacement was under warranty, the dealership was not willing to replace the seal with anything else other than the Oem part. I could always try to get it replaced again but it would be on my own dime this time. Don't think it's worth it really. It's not giving me huge problems as the leak is very minimal.
