How much is a CPO worth to you on an 08 GT3 RS?

I've seen a couple 08's at some dealers for sale that are actually CPO'd and was wondering what type of mark-up from the dealer do you think that 2 yr warranty is worth?

They seemed to be advertised about $10-15k more than non CPO'd ones. I'm thinking I won't get my money back from the warranty if I sell it in 2 years unless I actually have some problems with the car and then hopefully it would pay for itself.

Any thoughts?

CPO is a very nice to have but not for an extra 10-15k. As you likely know you'll want to get any car you're considering inspected. I would call around some dealers to find out what an extended warranty would cost on the year, make, model and approximate mileage you're interested in.

From what I remember, dealers typically up charge ~2k for the CPO. Some of that depends on what works is done to get it up to par, e.g. brakes, tires, maintenance, etc.

Thanks. That is some good food for thought.

I was initially looking at this one here that is listed quite high but at a dealership and CP'd but has a shaky carfax regarding some engine work.
What do you think?

IMO, that price is too high. I realize it's a GT3RS and will call for more but not that much. I also would prefer to have navigation. That of course is personnel preference.

Have you looked at a 997.2 GT3? If your budget is around 100k you can pick up a sweet low mileage sample with plenty of upgrades.

Not quite your situation but my 05 996 Turbo S was too old to be CPO'd but I wasn't about to buy a 996 without some kind of warranty. I got a JMNA Platinum warranty that covers the car for 4yrs/48Kmiles from date and mileage at purchase. It was $3800. It has a deductible of $250 for any repairs at any cost. I'm having the power steering pump replaced for $1700 but with the warranty it is costing me $250 out the door. It's a good thing to have but be prepared to wait for estimates and approval on work and you have to fight for genuine Porsche parts because the warranty company will try to screw you if you aren't careful. CPO is definitely a good thing to have if you can get it at a reasonable price. After market warranty companies are not fun to deal with. Just my .02

Thanks guys.

I've driven a few .2 GT3's, a few .1 GT3's, and a .1 RS. Although the .2 did feel like it had a touch more torque down low, it wasn't enough to overshadow the little intangibles I liked about the RS. I understand and acknowledge I'll pay a premium for an RS, but I hope eventually that premium would pay for itself when time comes to sell (or "if" since I tend to keep my cars and pass them down).

The amount of .1 RS's on the market is quite small right now and since the lack of manual is already a well known secret in the upcoming 991 RS, I don't think people are holding onto their cars anticipating some announcement from Porsche.

I have a local shop going to check it out for a PPI. The dealer won't allow them to take the car back to their own shop but will allow my tech to put it on the dealer's rack and check it out.
Also, the dealer has sent me all of the maintenance records they have of the car but I am yet to receive the full warranty work history that I've requested.

Still interested in it because I like the specs but if the PPI comes back with any gremlins and they don't budge on the price I will walk away and look elsewhere.

I wanted an rs too. .2 rs were too much and still are for my budget. Plus I would have spent the same modding the .2 with safety and track goodies so ending up with a car costing maybe 40k more than a .1 rs. Very happy with the .1.

CPO on a cost basis is worth about 2k plus any repairs done for the CPO process.

Good luck

I personally think that people get too hung up on the marketing of a CPO. I think it is primarily because it's "easier" and well-known. All things equal, if I am staring at two cars I like identically, and one is CPO and one isnt, I want the CPO car. Same scenario and the CPO car is a couple thousand dollars more, I still take it. $10k more? No way. Buy a car that I really dont like color, options, etc. to get the CPO? No way.

The third party warranties that Porsche dealers sell are purported to be pretty good. Need to do homework on them, etc. And I am sure that those companies are more difficult to deal with, etc. But I think you have to weigh all that against the true liklihood that you are going to have expensive repairs, how long you are going to have the car, etc. It's sort of an insurance game you play, whether CPO or extended warranty.

I voted with my wallet on this after a lot of research. I found two cars I liked, one CPO, one not. I ended up buying the non-CPO car because of options, price, etc. and I will do the 3rd party warranty. I will buy the best and most comprehensive one offered for my 2011 GT3, and it will still only be a few thousand dollars.

^ That makes perfect sense. I would add that you should talk to the service underwriters at the dealership that you will frequent to find out which aftermarket company they prefer. The dealership has to spend a lot of time fighting to get work approved, hours authorized for the repairs, OEM parts, etc. If they already have a good relationship with a particular warranty company it will benefit you in the end. My car has been in the shop for 3 weeks because they haggled over the technician hours needed for the repairs and my situation wasn't a "part failure," but an "unusual noise." Thank god it isn't my daily driver!

I have had a CPO on an older 996 - worth it's weight in gold, a buddy of mine bought a CPO 996 GT3 which had been in an accident and fixed incorrectly (all corrected when they fixed his accident :-) ) The CPO in this case was at best a disappointment

That is one of the better prices I have seen being offered at that dealership.. I looked at a couple of .1RS's they had there about 6 months ago and we just couldn't come together on price... I was trading in a 996 TT with 20K on it. Ended up driving up 71N to Beachwood and purchased an 07 RS.. Is it the full CPO or just the remaining balance of the previous owner? Sometimes they play that little tap dance and tout the CPO deal when you are really only getting 6-12 months left..

In some cases you may not have to pay extra for the CPO. FWIW I found an 03 Turbo with a CPO and bought the car for around $4K less than the dealer's asking price. ($62K asking bought for $57.7K.)

Oh, the CPO came in handy. Real handy.

That is a great question. From the records I have the car was initially certified CPO by Porsche 2/2012. It then moved a round a few places and was again certified as a porsche approved vehicle at a different porsche dealer 2/2013.
Will the warranty be good to only 2/2014, 2/2015 or from 2 yrs from he date i purchase?
Any one know?

The max they can do on any car is 6yrs/100K miles from the very first in-service date.

Well they lowered the price and it sold right away. I'll keep looking for a blk/orange .1 RS.
