CGT Values-in response to "death spiral"
I know it was probably a rhetorical question, but it is one I can answer so...
959 sold for what converted as about $250,000 when new. That is in 1987 dollars -- BTW -- so now -- don't know what the would be.
Price skyrocketed to almost $1m. Then dropped.
Now you can find low mile cars in the mid 200k range -- but figure at least 30k in fixing it up no matter how nice it is. Then if you want to bring it to US and legalize -- add about another 50k.
Canepa sells cars they've extensively modified and modernized. I believe they sell for more than 400k, but mechanically are not all OEM, so if you want a pure 959 you have to look elsewhere.

Porsche 2005 sales are down from 2004
Still, your argument that Porsche sales OUGHT to be better in 2005 is not without merit. However, only time will tell if this is truly an ominous sign.

To repeat myself: Canepa 959's are HEAVILY MODERNIZED.
I'm sure if you contanct car brokers out there you will find a nice 959 for under 300k. Just be patient. One sold at Auction with Cali title, 3000 kilometers, for 275k one month ago.

Replacement parts are difficult if not impossible to find. That's the only thing that makes me nervous about buying one. If something should go wrong-and if you drive the car like it was meant to be driven, it likely will-you could be SOL.

RE: Parts. It is a concern. One time I had to wait three months for one. But the factory IS supporting the car now, and you can even get new factory original tires from Bridgestone.
Also, FWIW, once you drive the car a while and fix up the bugs from lack of use, I found it to be as bullet-proof as any other Porsche and certainly a stunning car all around. I mean, how many sports cars do you know that can drive across a frozen lake at speed.
