GT2: How to improve the factory stereo?
Now that I'm steppin up to a GT3, I am gonna ask a question that will have the hardcore folks givin me hell. I do want to upgrade the stereo, and yes I know it adds weight, but gimme a break we are talking about 8-10 kilos.
Current stereo setup in my C2: Boston acoustics 6.5 components up front powered by a JL Audio 150/2, JL Audio 10.4 sub powered by a 250/1 amp, and an Alpine head unit. Question is where/how can I affordably get the C2 lower door panels to fit the 6.5 mid bass woofers again??

Cerebus,
I am almost 100% sure that the radio is powering the
system and it sucks...no seperate amp in our cars. A speaker upgrade MIGHT add a little detail but don't be fooled by thinking it will make a significant improvement. I managed a car audio store for ten years and have an extensive backgroud with 911's.

Adding new speakers will do nothing.

Have you changed the speakers in either your GT2 or 3?
More importantly, did you ever have a Malibu Z06 vs GT2 showdown?
Thanks.

How much of a percentage improvement do you think I would get by putting in different coaxes? Would adding an amplified aftermarket CD receiver improve things much more?
I prefer the factory look, but I don't understand the benefit of the flip down mechanism versus the conventional front loading slot.

Yup, the head units are crappy and underpowered.

If your car is fiber optic do the above with an aftermarket head unit and you might as well ad sat radio too.
This upgrade will not ad much weight and if it does, go work out and lose a few pounds.
I work for Warner Music Group and we need to listen to music alot, so thats my excuse. In reality I love the sound of the P Car, but being able to rock out a little is a must in any car.
OK I got my boxes from JL AUDIO
This is what they gave me for the car.
1 300/4 channel JL AMP
1 set of VR525-cxi COAXIALS 5.25 inch 130mm woofer
1 set of JL TR400-cxi 4 inch

A simple solution would be to have a small subwoofer (8" speaker or 2) enclosure/s that is installed into the rear deleted seat cushion area. This can be powered by a JL250/1 mono subwoofer amplifier located in the front trunk.
Now with the Alpine head unit, you can electronically hi-pass all four of the 4" speakers which will allow them to play cleaner and louder. The head will also give you an independent sub-level control right through the main volume control ****.
If you can find a good independent dealer in your area, they should easily be able to perform this installation. The 996 cars are relatively simple to work on. If you don't know of any, go to Alpine's or JL's website and search by zip code for a local dealer in your area.
Best,
Pete
For me the ideal system would be what I had in my C2, Boston Pro series 6.5 3 way up front and 10 inch JL sub in back, problem is the GT3 doors don't have the speaker panel, so what to do, either get new door panels? Or go with 4.5 inch components up front, and my 10 inch JL sub in the back.
Anybody changed the door panels on a GT3 to put mid bass speakers in the doors?

you don't have to change your door panels to get 6.5" speakers in there, but you do need to find a good shop that really knows what they are doing and works on the P-cars alot. check out this place. www.signatureaudiousa.com . they are located in the heart of scottsdale AZ and they do ALOT of 911's. a close friend of mine owns the place. They do alot of work for people out of state that ship vehicles to them also.
