There is a big difference, in my opinion, between looking and "looking". A lot of people tend to "see" things with their hands, and by leaning on them and otherwise touching them. I have seen car salesmen do this many times, so it isn't strictly limited to kids.
Bottom line is that respect should breed respect. Respectful admirers should be greeted by respectful owners.
