Unhappy Busted shock absorber after 2,000 miles

Not to be alarmist...

My dealer has just informed us that we need the replace the front shock absorbers on the GT3. The car only has around 3k kms on the clock.

I'm extremely careful with the car, and it has never hit any pot holes, cats eyes, or experienced any kind of impact that would conceivably damage shock absorbers on a "normal" car, such as a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. Much less a GT Porsche.

I can only imagine that it was some kind of defect from the factory.

I noticed that there would be a "klonking" sound from the front suspension, when driving over roads that were not glass smooth. You'd hear it at low speed. I immediately thought it may be a shock absorber issue, as I've experienced this sort of thing before with my Evo.

Only one shock needed replacing. But the dealer is doing both under warranty. Well, props to them for that!

Still, needless to say, very disappointing.

CorsicanBB is infamous around these parts
Understand your disappointment, man! Even though they are covering this under warranty, it still sucks!

Did the klonking sound start from the moment you got the car or was it gradual?

it was gradual.

i still love the car, but things like this detract from Porsche's mystique as having that bulletproof build quality and durability. the car is supposed to be bred for the track.

i've had three Mitsubishi Evos that have had more mileage and more track time, and never experienced shock absorber failure on the stock shocks. (i did have racing only coil-overs fail, but that's because I insisted on using them on the street).

Interesting - good that they cover this, but still strange and makes you wonder about the quality of parts getting installed at the factory today.

Glad that Porsche is covering it for you. Things like this happen and I hope it's just an isolated case.

Hey JV,

We had the exact same thing several times on the r turbo, turned out we were missing a tiny washer on the top of the shock absorber and the rubber mounting.
