Whoa, whoa, crunch....
from what I read, the driver had an automatic and was a left foot braker, so it's easy to understand why in a panic he'd hit the clutch. Shame on the event coordinator for making the finish line near parked cars. Total bummer for the owner of the GT3 though, but atleast he'll get a new paint job out of the deal.
That sucks completely. Some courses are set up by morons. A 200ft speed section and a last-minute tight turn into the timing lights--closest to the spectators and paddock??? Whoever set up that course should be banned from SCCA comp for life. Could've killed somebody.
I was in an autocross 10yrs ago here in SD, and the course designer had two turns converging on each other from different sections. Well, wouldn't you know it, somebody blew a turn and came into the driving line of the next section over with a car bearing down on him at WOT in 3rd gear--luckily his reaction time was stellar and he turn off of the course and avoided a collision. I was watching this up close with some friends, and our hearts all skipped a beat. Even an autocross can be very dangerous, given the wrong setup.

Even if you're an automatic driver and used to left-foot braking, you're in the wrong car in the wrong event if you make those kind of mistakes..
Given the potential consequences, I think this was class A reckless driving.

These posts as frequent as they are are quite laughable. It's like there is a sports car crash paparazzi culture just waiting to cash in (figuratively) on someone else's car crash demise. It amazes me how fast the pictures make it around the globe on the web....Okay...off my soapbox
Well i think everyone who has driven THEIR car to a limit even if it is confined to an autocross setup is under the understanding that if they screw up that is their loss... Now to drive a FRIEND's car to the limit you have to be able to buy them a new one. People don't seem to get that... I have been an auto journalist for 20 years now. I have been given thousands of cars for review and photographic reasons... I have also tracked a bunch too ... I did loose a Viper SRT 10 off the side of a autocross course trying to power it around a corner but the circuit was properly laid out and the only carnage was some tall grass, my pride, and a smallish fire (tall grass and exhaust system don't mix on hot summer day) No harm no foul...
People are (usually young guys who don't realize the fact if i break it i have to buy it) always asking me if they can drive my media cars. NO not unless there is a reason like i need someone to drive back and forth while i shoot....
The guy who Loaned the car risked it the guy who borrowed it risked it... Both should be aware of the fall out from screwing up BEFORE the key is turned.

the sad part is the photos got out and you can identify the cars. i'm sure the owners didn't give permission for these to be put out there. its complicated enough working out insurance coverage for an incident like this and add photos of the incident to the mix doesn't help. it highly depends on their insurance but if they don't specifically exclude driving on a closed course and this was a "fun run", and it wasn't timed they might have a case for coverage. i have seen some poorly laid out courses before but this one takes the cake. every autox i have seen has a series of corners before the end designed to slow you down.

This is the USA, people are free to take pictures and post, unless they are someone else's pictures. If anything these pictures would help insurance agency's for proof of what really happened. That way there are no false claims made, which makes all of our rates go up

naturally if this was a timed event or competition then that will work itself out. however if this was not a timed run, then depending on the insurer this becomes grey.
and yes this is a free country. its not illegal to post pictures however it would be courteous to at least blur out the license plates. i wouldn't post it personally.
