996 GT3 vs. 997 GT3

This seems like an obvious comparison, but my searches aren't coming up with anything relevant. Has anybody here owner the 996 and moved up to a 997 version? I've read a few comparisons in the British mags which of course say the 997 is a much improved machine. However, is the 996 GT3 performance still something to acknowledge, or is it paled in comparison. Better put; is the 996 at ~40% less money a good option?

IMHO if you are looking for a dedicated track car then the 996 GT3 is a much better option. The HP difference might seem significant but the weight gains counteract some of that.

However, if you are looking for a great all around car that is not going to be your dedicated track car then the 997 is IMHO the better choice.

I had/have both but my 996 was a monster Manthey 410-
I dont notice that much more power in the 7- but the ride and handling for
me are much better-the 6 was too nervous -the 7 more competent. The 7 looks alot better-The stock seats in the 7 are light years ahead of the stock seats in the 6 but that was easily fixed with the GT3 euro seats. I like the 7 stock ones better just because I can get to the back since they fold.
The question is- is the 7 $50K better than a 996 GT3 right now. Really the only way to answer the questions is for you to drive both.

IMO hp/weight difference in that case (same power both cars) would > refinement improvments for 997

Better car does go to the 997 though.
My quote from the other thread.

seems like it depends on what you are looking to get out of the car.

trackable street car -> 997 GT3
streetable track car--> 996 GT3

Old Guy I feel strange writing this because I would guess I'm older (57) but I'm still crazy. Now you said your 996 GT3 had 410 hp. Some great power ! Was that rwHP ? My 997 GT3 stock dyno'ed at 361 rwHP. I've heard the stock ranges have been 355 to 370 rwHP. For my car that's about a 13% DT loss. The FVD headers really woke up the midrange dramatically which is were you want it. You can see the headers on my thread about "Big Bird" and Kermit.

I believe oldguy has a Manthey 410 kit, which is what I wanted on my car but way too expensive.

Ranger that was the 410 kit. I dont remember the dyno number but I had the chart and it was close to 415. I gave all that stuff to new owner. But I dont notice a big power increase in the 7. So it must have been close to 410.
