So then g-force sorry to reiterate questions, i'm looking for clarification.

You buy the car in another state. You pay no tax in that state. You keep the car out of Cali for 90+ days. You pay no sales tax anywhere?

What about if you lease the car will the leasing company let you do that? I'm planning a corporate lease.

is there a minimal mileage restriction?

i'd assume if one were to lease in this scenerio, then you're only saving tax on your down payment and the 1st 3 months of payment. thereafter, tax is applied on a monthly basis for the rest of term.

I doubt that would be the case, since the lease payments are made to the leasing company. The lease documents are drawn up at the beginning of the lease and the lease company is not going to know where you've moved the car to.

yes i agree.

[edit] hmmm... maybe not. i seem to recall a finance guy telling me that the tax on your lease will change depending on the state you move to. so if you started the lease on cali and then you move to some other state, you're then taxed based on your new state for the remainder of the term, iirc.

It also depends on the state that you buy the car in. For example, if you purchase in Oregon, there is no sales tax. However, if you purchase from a dealer in Nevada, there is sales tax. Oddly enough, if you purchase from a private party in Nevada and it qualifies as an "occasional sale", there is a sales tax exemption.

You can buy a car out of state and ship it to hawaii, where you pay no tax on a car bought and shipped in regardless of days after purchase date. and it only costs $150-$200 to register. From that point you can ship it wherever and renew your reg every year online for the same amount, as long as you got the hook ups on getting safety check mailed to you once a year. $15 for a safety check per year...

You need to speak to the right person. The issue is more complex than the usual query for them. It's analagous to calling the IRS and asking them about alternative minimum tax.

Call AAA or Board of Equalization. There is a form just for this.

I have Form BOE-106. is that the one you are talking about?

I'll call the BOE today. My question is this, I found a new car in Michigan if i purchase the car today and it never enters california for 90 days I wont have to pay any tax? Or do I pay the tax in Michigan. (this is for a new never titled car)
