Callifornia Sales tax rules Change-HORRAY!

Well 4 years ago in my misguided years I bought a Ferrari 550
(I called it the Bananna Boat).
At that time if you bought a car out of state and kept it out
90 days you could bring it in with no Sales or Use tax. So that
is why I had 15000 mile service done in PA.
That rule changed shortly thereafter and the waiting period went
to 1 YEAR!!
AS of July 07 the rule changed back to 90 days.....YES!!!
So the $16,000 I'm saving might just go to Superleggera Seats
and some aftermarket wheels!!!!!!!
Bottom line Ca folks....If you buy your exotic out of state and keep it there
over 90 days you're home free!

So if this advice saves you some money just buy me & the wife dinner!!!! HA!
I wanted to see this change in writing so the AAA girl showed it to me.

Her internal memo dated July 17,2007.

So if this advice saves you some money just buy me & the wife dinner &
donate $100 to Make A Wish Foundation!

Wow thats a truly epic bit of information.

So you need the bill of sale dated 90 days prior to your attempt to register the vehicle here?

If so, does this mean you can't file the pink slip in the state of CA for 90 days? Keeping the whole transaction in limbo?

Or do you just register it in the state of purchase for 90 days, then transfer the registration here?

Obviously you have to pay the taxes of the state that you bought the car in ... So what states do you recommend purchasing vehicles and shipping them in from which little to no tax on vehicles?

I'm not registering it out of state. In my case I have an MSO
on the new Spider and a bill of sale. No need to go into DMV until
car is in California. Then you sign a "statement of facts" in my case Examine the car at
DMV . If it were not on an MSO ....AAA can handle everything for you and you
don't even deal with DMV!

Nevada has no sales tax... and very low registration fees.

I'm gonna have to check this bit out.

no every state is different but in most all cases no tax is charged to out of state buyers. For instance I bought the spider in Texas and paid a few hundred bucks for some rinky dink tax buy NO SALES or USE tax.

Obviously California dealers are not happy with this but so few people
do this that it really isn't killing them.

Hold on, Nevada does have sales tax, almost as high as CA, depending on the county. The states with no general sales tax are Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Some others have low rates or maximum amounts on car, boats, etc.

IIRC South Carolina has extremely low sales tax and registration tax for cars.

Unfortunately, NV has plenty of sales tax (7.375% where I live), and vehicle registration fees are based on the estimated value of the car. I just paid $577 to renew registration on my '01 996tt.
