Gallardo 1:23.90 sec
BMW M5 1:29.95 sec. ("feels like a lifetime in difference)

0-100 mph
Gallardo 10.0 secs
M5 10.4

0-150 mph
Gallardo 22.7 secs
M5 22.9


The test ends with:

"The BMW M5 packs an engine every bit the equal of the Lamborghini's, but even M Power's spectacular fireworks can't disguise the fact that while the Gallardo was born great the M5 has had greatness thrust upon it"

exactly, why do journos constantly compare cars which are so different? i mean how is a 4 door family saloon comparable to a 2 door exotic? not many people who, when shopping for a car, would put a gallardo or an m5 into the same boat.

 

I think it started when BMW chose to put a V10 in a family car.
Or when MB supercharged their E55.
Or when Audi twin-turbocharged their A4 and A6.

On boards like this you constantly read "I beat this and that sportscar with my E55/M5/RS6/whatever at the red light."

What is the problem with a test like this?
Why not compare them on the race track as well?

But the Gallardo's extra 2 seats have been awfully hard to find.

Even an M6 vs. Gallardo comparison would have been more appropriate, and that still has 2 more seats as well.

 

well then ditch the seats, they are what they are and must accept the fact they cannot compete at the same standard without compromise

 

How was the M5 not born great? The M5 is the car that really started all this HP madness. If it wasnt for an M5 sedans would still be boring.

 

People seem to be brainwashed as to what the M5 is.

 

I personally love such comparisons since it brings out the limitation of different types of cars. A sports sedan just can't be as agile as a sports cars. We know know exactly how much different they are.

 

Just once I want to see a comparison like there where the events are: daycare shuttling, grocery getting, and car-pooling. I think the outcome would be just as predictable, but if it was well written, it would be very amusing.

These are neat comparisions along the lines of Car versus Fighter jet or Train.

I dont even consider the Gallardo and the M5 in the same league. 0-150 is close but has little meaning in the real world.

I consider the M5 one of the greatest sedans in the world which forces sports car makers to up the ante in order to stay ahead.

 

this is shocking. No really, it is. I never would have thought a lighter, smaller, 2 seat supercar would have been faster around a track than a 4 door saloon. I mean, that's just...I need a second to think about this. This has crushed my understanding of physics.

I just thought of EVO's next comparison. It should be equally shocking. Gallardo vs Truck. By truck, I mean, 18 wheeler baby!! yeah!! those have about 500 hp. Apples to apples right? Wonder who's going to win, can't wait to see the results.
