Used E-class... good used car?
Is it just me or is a used E class one of the best used car deals out there. I'm looking for a new DD and 2004 E500s with less than 40k miles can be had for less than $25k.
Are there any issues I should look for while looking at used e classes? My friend had the generation before, i believe it was a 2001 and the thing was bullet proof all the way till he sold it at 165k miles. Is the newer gen as reliable as those were?
Also, what other cars around that price range do you think are good used car deals?

E class are good daily but not sporty at all. Previous generation E were better made IMO. You may want to search mbworld.org for common issues. Best to get one that still has some warranty left.
Under $25k, I'd consider used Audi A4, S4, CLK also. Maybe even a used 7 series, Acura RL or LS430. If budget allows, the new C300 which is much more exciting and sharp looking. It really depends what is important to you - comfort, sporty, gas mileage, safety, reliability.

I have heard too many horror stories to buy a benz now a days. I hear that the late 80's early 90's ones where tanks and rock solid. Now I feel that the majority of audi/MB are check engine light finicky cars that can't really be enjoyed unless you have a solid wallet to fork over for repairs and maintenance. Some say that it is a marketing tactic...
Having owned three E-class cars (93-300E, 01-E55, 08-E350) I can say the 90's were certainly tanks and the new ones can't compare on that level. However, they are still great cars and represent a good daily driver. I use them as my 'beater' car and they are great for around town and road trips.

I have not had good luck, I would not buy one without a warranty, period. Transmission, electrical, and engine problems.....and bad service to boot...just my 2c
Look at consumer reports, I think they identify the problem areas..

I had an 03 E320 given to me by an elderly parent who stopped driving with only 11K miles in pristine condition . She never had a problem with the car in four years of very short drives but by the time the car reached 17K miles it was a nightmare of reliability and off warranty.
One day I traded it in and leased an 07 . Beautiful car . It has been absolutely perfect for 23K miles . In fact the overall fit and finish of the facelifted car is quite a difference .
I highly recommend this car.
