CLK Black series
Their mottos is, "if you don't want to pony up the bucks, someone else will!"
Clarkson sold his Black Series and had complaints that he didn't realize when he first bought it. I don't remember exactly but I think it was the seats, gas tank capacity, and perhaps long distance comfort... IIRC
The clk black series are great cars. Im a tech and have worked on many. Ive seen minimal problems compared to other vehicles. Ive actually only replaced one fuel pump on ones as far as parts going bad or defects. The car still ran great because it actually has 2 fuel pumps, with the one bad it turned check engine light on and limited it on power to 400ish. I've seen one other one have a bad coilover- started to make knocking noise. All the other work ive done on them is from bodyshops (poor work), or drivers wrecking the car.
You really need to test drive one. If you've got the finances to afford one they should let you no questions asked. All the cars you are comparing it to arent on the same level. Amg cars are like the m-series but perhaps softer - more luxury/comfort with exception to the sl63 and c63. The black series is far from an ordinary amg car and very unlike mercedes. the steering is very stiff and tight compared to any modern car ive driven. The ride quality is defineatly of a higher quality coilover. If on a rough road you will know it. This car was designed for the track not to commute or go over speed bumps. It handles amazing which is also due to the pzero corsa tires which are staggered and directional- it has a specific tire for each corner. I think it handles so well it actually makes the 63 motor feel lacking in power in comparison to the other vehicles becuase its so controlable. The seats are stiffer and have a lot of extra bolstering. It definately takes a little finess to getting in without having the seat side bolster from jabbing your butt, but once your in you wont want out. It does have more road noise then a typical benz but nothing more than the exhaust or stereo cant cure. As far as reliablility its a benz. It will never leave you stranded. Tires are gonna cost you 500-600$ each, and when you need brakes there gonna cost you too- two peice rotors/brembos $$$$ but without track use they should last atleast 40k (the rotors not pads)
All around if you dont mind a "harsh" ride in comparison to a luxury sports car, dont mind 2 seaters, little extra road noise and getting i f!#@ed at the occasional stoplight go for it. If i had the money this is the only car i'd daily drive over an slr because its reliable, realistically useable on a daily basis and not on every street corner. You'd be much happier with this car then a porsche. Theres no carpeting on the doors (cheap interior) and people wont think your a dousche for owning it.
