McLaren's Mercedes SLR convertible is well on its way to production
Fancy feeling the wind in your hair... at 207mph? That's the incredible prospect awaiting potential owners of the McLaren Mercedes SLR convertible - a car that has remained top secret until now.
Auto Express has learned a drop-top version of the car built in Woking, Surrey, is well on its way to production, and will be officially unveiled within six months.
It follows in the wheeltracks of the Vision SLR concept car, and will use the same 626bhp V8 as the standard model. With McLaren's composite body, the SLR convertible will be as strong as the fixed-roof version, and its performance just as explosive. Prices start at a hair-raising £350,000.

Fix roll bar? The back must be real tight or else MB would have used a pop up roll bar for better looks. I'd rather have chrome roll bar since it's fixed type.
Seems like car is overly engineered mechanically and not enough practicality even for a supercar. Trunk must be tiny and no space behind seats. All motor and gadgets.

Not sure if they called it quits or not, but when there's money to be made, everyone is willing to work. Also, it seems there may not be further McLaren engineering needed, perhaps it is all MB's work on the convertible.

as you can see, the SLR excels mainly at straightline accleration and braking under high speeds...
in which, the SL65 crushes the accleration and the brakes can be improved in the SL65 for a much less cost...
furthermore, the SL65 is only 1/3 - 1/4 of the SLR's price...
ok, the SLR may have the gullwing doors, so what?
it may be made of carbon fiber which makes it light, but whos going to track a GT car? Ok, you get an air brake system, but is it worth 450,000 USD of special?
aside from exclusivity, theres no reason for any one in the world to consider buying the SLR..
just my 2 cents
overpriced or not, it's official
Mercedes confirms drop-top SLR plans

Mercedes has officially confirmed it will build a convertible version of the McLaren SLR, according to a published report. Zero to 60 mph will take under four seconds, and a top speed of 200 mph will still be possible.
The SLR roadster will arrive this summer, with a possible debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, according to The Car Connection.
The new model will closely resemble the Mercedes-Benz Vision SLR concept (pictured), which debuted at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show, nine months after the coupe prototype was unveiled at the Detroit auto show.

From www.thecarconnection.com:
Mercedes Benz originally showed off the Vision SLR coupe at the 1999 Detroit Auto Show, followed by the roadster version of the same car in September of that year in Frankfurt. In 2004 a production version of the SLR coupe finally arrived courtesy of Mercedes' F1 partner, McLaren. Yesterday, The Car Connection reported that Mercedes has now confirmed that they will finally introduce a open-top version of the SLR beginning this summer. No further details are available yet, although something might be announced at the Geneva Auto Show next month.
